Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

GAMOM - I don't know if my reply helped any or not, but I asked you a question as well to clarify. Be sure to post your reply in the group. Thanks!

Hi GAMOM - I am glad that you have joined Beyond BC. Please feel free to come to the comment area and introduce yourself. Also, please do not hesitate to ask any questions that you might have about Navy life in training or in the fleet. We mostly just post questions and answers in the Comment Wall area as more people receive that in their email feeds.

Good Morning Gamom and welcome to our group. We are glad you are here.

I remember you when you were posting back in March. So if he is going to OCS use the links that LeAnn gave you.

If he is going to Boot Camp here is a link for you:

Boot Camp First Weeks Timeline(See Things to Do in the Last Month Before Your Future Sailor Leaves for RTC.)

I also help out and that's why I didn't respond back then as I only know a little bit about OCS school as I have a few friends that their loved ones have gone thru the academy!

When you can let us know which one so you don't get over whelmed with all of the information.

GAMOM - Welcome to the BC Mom group. Would you please clarify, is your son enlisting and going to Great Lakes for BC or is he going to Officer school elsewhere?  I saw that LeAnn had posted on your BC question and so I did not reply as my son is enlisted. The BC Mom group is primarily made up of enlisted moms and is all about information for Recruit Training Command at GL.

Recruit Training Command Home Page (navy.mil) - That is the link for the RTC I will try to get back with you when I have a confirmation of where your son is actually headed. The best place to ask questions though is on the BC Mom group page, be sure to scroll all the way down the group page, past the discussions and post in the comment wall area since more members follow those postings.

We all volunteer our time on here and Saturday can be a little hit and miss.

#1 priority before he leaves, make sure he has a valid driver's license for your state. If he had a vehicle check with your insurance company on how to insure once he is where he will want a vehicle.

#2 (not in any order) get a POA for all his needs medical and financial, especially if you are not on his bank accounts as a joint owner.

#3 Get his passport.

#4 Set up an account with NFCU for his direct deposits to go into and then get the accounts linked with his other local bank account and make sure you can transfer money to his bank accounts if need be.

#5 Get a calling card for a paid phone so he can call you from BC if he is going to GL. If not able to, then he should be able to buy there. His accessories need to be black, so a solid black watch, an inexpensive Casio works fine, wallet we were told should be black as well but I don't think that matters as much.

#6 Make sure he takes his cell phone and charger. He will use this to make his initial "I'm Here" call and then it will be boxed up, and he will go to ROM (restriction of movement ) quarantine at Ft. McCoy. He will be given back his box before going to A school. He will pack up the clothes on his back, so he may want to wear his nice tennis shoes, and just a comfortable pair of clothes and jacket for the plane ride.

He must have his SS Card, his driver's license if he has one and his bank account information with him. (Those should stay on his person in a concealed place.)

Keep a note in his wallet with addresses, phone numbers, a couple of stamps, and some moleskin for his shoes, and also a short note to encourage him as it is taking about 4 - 5 weeks for our moms to get their form letter with the address and then time for them to get the letters from you. Read these with your son.
