Welcome to the New MA Mom's & families.
As far as I know they are still doing 2 week quarantine when they arrive at A School. A school when my sailor went was 2 week quarantine then wait until they had enough to fill classes. Luckily they were able to fill up classes & start pretty much at end of quarantine period.
We were extremely lucky & he was granted chit to come home for a couple days before reporting to 1st duty station. Others were not so lucky. I actually flew to pick him up after A school. He of course had to pay for flight from us to duty station but, he (&Mom) felt it was worth it. :-)
BNMH to each.
MA was not his 1st choice as he went in with his EMT & Fire Fighting Certifications but, both those areas were filled when he joined. I roll with theory that everything (even if feels like setback or bad) happens for a "reason" that we may not see at that moment but, brings blessings over time...And happy to say he is enjoying is job as a MA.
I have found in my many many years that often times the setback or road block that left me disappointed or upset often brought better to my life no matter how hard & painful it felt at the time. I try to instill that into my children too but, they have a harder time grasping that being young.
Kim's husband Troy: Awesome...thank you!!
HkyNvyMom - you are correct that the weeks of training begin once they start their training. If I recall my son's training was only 8 weeks once he classed up. Just encourage him to study for his tests and qualifications. My son said several in his class got set back during different training weeks and caused their A-school to go longer.
Quick question for anyone:
Is A-School the full 9 weeks? If so, when does the 9 weeks start? Someone was saying that the 9 weeks starts when the kiddos get to A-school. But I would think the 9 weeks starts when they actually start A-school. Thoughts?
Kim's husband Troy: That is great. My kiddo is hoping to get to go to Europe. He figures he has travelled all over the US for hockey, now he wants to see more of other countries. But he would be cool with everything. He is always up for adventure :)
HkyNvyMom - My son went back and forth on whether to volunteer for PRP. What ultimately sold him on it was it allowed him to stay state side for almost the entire length of his first contract. Now that he is on the job he really seems to enjoy so far.
Hello all,
Sorry for the delayed response Seastheday. I have been traveling for work. I know he does not want to do dog handling and as far as I know he has not "chosen" to do anything specific yet. He was considering PRP. But we will see. He loves dogs and said he would be heart broken if anything happened to the animal, which is why he did not interview for dog handling...lol.
Happy Mother's Day weekend everyone!!
Seastheday - My son graduated BC last October and had to wait 5-6 days before flying to Texas. Some of his classmates waited longer so I think it's hit and miss. That was at the height of the pandemic to so your son may be quicker. Hopefully your son will like his new rate as MA. He will get to handle weapons and learn some hand to hand take down moves and defense. My son enjoyed A-school except for the OC course. Said his eyes hurt for 2-3 days after.
HkyNvyMom - Is your son hoping for a specific assignment within the MA rate like working dog handler or harbor patrol? More than likely his instructors will talk with him about volunteering for PRP. I think they are still trying to fill those positions up?
Good morning!!!
My son is currently in A school for MA. He graduated BC on a Thursday and left for San Antonio Saturday morning. He was in San Antonio for about two weeks before he started which was nice because he was able to get settled in before starting up. They also take life skills classes their first week there. My kiddo officially started this week. So far so good!!
Good Morning MA moms! Im new to this group. My son called us yesterday and told us he has a new contract and will now be a MA. He was not able to pass his "uncorrected vision test" so he had to choose another job. He was kinda down but saw some positives to the new job he selected. I would love to know how your Sailors have done in A School? How long did it take to get from BC in GL to A School? Did they ship out right away? He will graduate from BC 6/24. Looking forward to learning more from all of you and connecting over the weeks/months.
Have a blessed day!
