The AE/CF spins into two different job classifications; FCs and ETs. My husband was an FC for 10 years and our son is currently slated to be an FC however at least two of our moms thought their sons were FCs but once they got into the ATT program at GL - their sons were switched to ETs.

The initial schooling for both classifications is the same, ATT schooling at GL this provides them with basic electronics training and then they spin into their own area of specialty for more schooling.

For FCs - 60% of their enlisted time is spent at sea, I have not found how much time an ET will be at sea yet but this is what I found about the ET field...

Thanks for posting this. I wondered how much time he spends at sea.
From what I have read the duties between FC and ETs are so similiar so don't know if the sea time is the same as well. More homework to do!!!
When my husband was in he was a DS data systems Tech then they did away with DS and put them in with the FC's. When he was in the sea time was 4 years and shore time was 2 years. But he retired 11 years ago so I don't know if that has changed. We have a friend that is an ET master Chief I will ask him when we talk to him next week.
That would be great Jackie - we have a group of FCs and ETs and would welcome any information that Master Chief can share.
My husband called him today, My husband is typing this now, my friend the ETCM (SW) (CMC), said that he would look into individuals being switched from FC to ET. He did say that the ET rating was becoming undermanned which translates to earlier advancement opportunities along with larger re-enlistment bonuses. The sea/shore rotation is perpetually changing depending on the needs of the Navy. It also changes according to your rank and NEC's. If anyone needs a translation for all of these acronyms let me know.
Love,
Bill
Thanks Bill, great info - we may want to post it in the AE/CF forum. There are about 10 members there right now and all are ETs and FCs. I know all the acronyms...been around the Navy too long!!!

I had heard that the FCs were in big need as well - so I'm hoping that is the case. We appreciate any updates that you might be able to share with us.
Hello Bill,

Have you heard anything more regarding the switching from FC to ET?

Kelly
Hi Kelly, I talked to my friend and he said that he still hasn't heard anything definitive, other than the rating system is kind of frozen and going through a re-vamping and he will let me know as soon as he hears from his friend up in Great Lakes.
Love,
Bill
Excellent please keep us informed as soon as you find something out.

Thanks!

Kelly
Kelly, My Husband talked to his friend about a week ago and he said that they are not going to be combining the rates.
My son is an ET and has been in the Navy nearly 6 years. He has had two sea duties (home base in Japan - 2 years and home base in CA- currently 2 1/3 of 3 years). His next duty station will be shore duty. He is currently on his 3rd deployment. Approximately 50% of his time since finishing C school has been at sea. I don't know if that's average or not for an ET. Carolyn
Hey Carolyn, we are so glad that you joined us. My husband was an FC for 10 years so we lived in Japan and loved it. I think for both the ETs and FC ratings that 50-60% of their time is deployed.

We have a few ET moms as part of this group, they will be so happy to have your knowledge.
