The purpose of this forum is designed to inform those parents of sailors who aspire to the rate of GM. It is intended to aide parents with what to expect once their sailor graduates boot camp (BC)..also known as PIR, and moves to the A-School side of the base. Questions will be answered by the family of sailors who are training to be GMs. If we don't have the answers, we will get them for you.

Please introduce yourself if your sailor is in the GM rate and provide background on your sailor so that we can get to know you. If you have specific questions about these ratings, and you ask them here, Will and Hoppi will be able to answer your questions. This will help all of us because the answers won't disappear pages down in the general forum.

I want to give Gary T. credit for this great idea; he just hired me as his secretary to put it together. So, jump in and we hope this will be helpful to all of you.

Vee, I think the wait for all schools except for A- school is moving along rapidly. Nick is now in his 9th week of hold for A-school. 41 business days and counting. With A-school being put back two weeks as Bill Sick posted, Nick may have another 3 or 4 weeks to wait for school. All GM families should be aware of the hold times for all classes. Please feel free to express your feelings here. We are all family here, one big GM family all going through the same experience. Gary T.
I really appreciate this forum so we parents have some idea and that we can try to encourage their sailors. David finished boot camp 4/17, and his second school the other day. He told me yesterday that he has been told he might have to wait another 2-5 months before even starting A-school, so he was pretty discouraged. Unfortunately, he has a younger brother (18) who was considering the Navy but now is having second thoughts seeing what his brother is going through. Thanks for the support we get from all of you!
Gary...my friend!!! Nick is exactly at the time frame Michael was at when he classed up for A school. I believe it was 64 actual days...not "butt in seat" days. Did you see a post in answer to Bill's comment re: the computer problem in A school backing it up a couple of weeks? I didn't and I was curious. I haven't talked with Michael in a couple of days so I can't add anything to that. Also, I am going to be back in Georgia starting Monday, July 27th, until about the 15th of August, so can you back me up on "our" forum here if you are around???? Please and thanks bunches. I may be able to get a few minutes now and then on my son's computer, but am not sure and I don't have a laptop to take with me. We are all hanging in here together.....
Hi my son Shawn has PIR July 31st and will be staying in GL for Gunners Mate school. I have to ask will he get a weekend leave ? His brother my middle son is getting married Oct 17th and Shawn is his best man, we were told by his recruiter that he could put in for it as long as its with in 300 miles of GL ? Shawn was specific about asking this because had he known he would not get leave over the weekend he would have held BC off till after the wedding, this is an important thing for my son ?
Lynn, please read all of the threads in this forum. You should then have a general idea of dates and where Shawn may be when 17/10/09 arrives. I do not know where you live but if it is in the 300 mile radius he may take liberty if he is free for that weekend. Each ship is different and only time will tell which ship he will eventually end up on. My suggestion is to wait till the time draws near and make a game plan to follow. If you live over the 300 mile radius then Shawn will have to apply for a leave. It is sometimes hard to obtain a leave but it can be done especially if the sailor is on hold and not in a class. There are a lot of unknowns here but his SDC on the ship he will eventually live on should be able to make suggestions. On the down side he may have to miss the wedding. I am sorry I don't have a crystal ball and I would surely love to give you an exact answer to your question ref the wedding but there are too many variables to consider.

Now with ref to your first question I may be somewhat more accurate. My son Nick moved to the A-school side immediately after P.I.R.. Because he was a new graduate and was now on the A-school side he was given a week-end liberty with a 300 mile restriction. He had to check in twice each day by phone. Some sailors who do not transfer immediately and stay on the RTC base will be allowed to leave the base if they do not have duty but must return each night. The day of the P.I.R., Shawn should know if he will be moving to the A-school side. Sorry I could not be more informative or positive with ref to your questions. Gary T.
Shawn told me last week in a letter and on the phone he heard A-School for Gunners Mate will be 21 weeks not 27 like he was told ?
Hi Lynn...glad you have joined our little GM group. I do believe GM school time has been shortened a little bit. They are now trying out a pilot program where all the sailors in the class move at the same pace....i.e., some aren't working ahead and some aren't lagging behind and they all graduate together. My grandson started GM A school on July 8 and his anticipated date of graduation is mid-september. I believe it is about 54-57 "butt in seat" days long (as Hoppi would say). Bill Sick is a good one to ask this of because his son is about to graduate from GM A school. BIll had posted a comment on the main page about a computer problem delaying graduation about 2 weeks, but I haven't seen an answer to this yet.
Gary T gave you some really great info above in his post. If your son moves to the school side of the base immediately after his P.I.R., he is called a "grad 'n go." Otherwise, he may be held on the bootcamp side for awhile. My grandson was a "grad 'n go" and he was able to leave base that Friday night after he got moved over to the A School side and spent the weekend with his Dad and step-mom who checked him out.
I am going on vacation for about 3 weeks in a couple of days and won't be able to be too active on here until I get back home. So, hang in there for the ride and there are great people on here who will help you out.
Hi my son Shawn just got sent over to A School yesterday (wendsday) and he's called 3x's it's great to hear his voice and to hear him so positive about A school- Gunners Mate school. Nice to meet everyone in Gunners mate School.
Welcome to the group Lynn, My son is in GL also. He should be finishing ATT school next week sometime then wait for A school to start. Have a great day
Darcy
Hi my name is Kim, my son will PIR Sept 11, 2009, his rate is Gunners Mate. He told me on our first phone call he will "go around the corner" and be "on hold" for 5 days and then start school, not sure if that is correct or not. He has never been one for being a wealth of information LOL
Hi Kim....welcome to the GM group forum; we are happy to have you join us. Congratulations on Marc's upcoming PIR. I am not sure what he means by "going around the corner" but he could mean "go to the A School side." He will then have his INDOC, SCC and ATT training in that order. There may be hold times in-between some of these as all of our sailors have experienced. Stay positive and hang in there tough for the long run and be encouraging to Marc as the hold times are tough on them. In earlier posts in this forum you will find some of our sailors' experiences and hold times. Again, a very WARM NAVY WELCOME; feel free to ask away and remember no question is a dumb question. No matter how many times it has been asked in the past, we are all here to answer it again. Have a great week!
Tasha "Zack"

My son will PIR on 11sept09 also!! Looking foward to learning what he has in store at GM
