The purpose of this forum is designed to inform those parents of sailors who aspire to the rate of GM. It is intended to aide parents with what to expect once their sailor graduates boot camp (BC)..also known as PIR, and moves to the A-School side of the base. Questions will be answered by the family of sailors who are training to be GMs. If we don't have the answers, we will get them for you.

Please introduce yourself if your sailor is in the GM rate and provide background on your sailor so that we can get to know you. If you have specific questions about these ratings, and you ask them here, Will and Hoppi will be able to answer your questions. This will help all of us because the answers won't disappear pages down in the general forum.

I want to give Gary T. credit for this great idea; he just hired me as his secretary to put it together. So, jump in and we hope this will be helpful to all of you.

Hi Tasha, and WELCOME! I am sure you have read the posts on here where you will gain a little history of what we have all experienced with our sailors. Congratulations on Zack's PIR coming upon 11sept09. Please let us know his progress after that. Remember we are all here to support one another and "no question is a dumb question." There are some really great people here to help out. Again, we are so happy to have you with us. Vee
At last! David called today and said that he finally has his date for A school. PIR was April 17, and A school will be Sept. 9. He has been really frustrated, but at least now he has something to look forward to. For the new parents out there, just keep encouraging your sailor. That was the best advice I got from this forum, and it also helped to see how long it was taking others to get into A school.
Mary, congrats to David. Hopefully he will start A-school when projected. If not tell him not to worry. It will happen. My son waited 11 weeks between A.T.T. and A-School. Nick is on the Cole, If David should see Nick, tell him to give Nick a shout. Gary T.
Hi Mary.....Congratulations on David's A School date. Usually they don't get the notice they are starting until the day before. I know how frustrating it must be for our sailors as Michael waited almost 6 months to the day from his PIR to classing up for A School. We, as parents, just need to keep supporting them in their endeavor and encouraging them every day. So, hang in there tough NAVY MOM.....Hugs, Vee
Robin "Chris"
You guys are the greatest! There is so much info available on this posting. All of my questions have generally been answered. My Tyler had PIR 08/07/09. He called today. He will report for SCC on Wednesday. He currently resides on the USS Enterprise.
Joanie, congratulations on Tyler's movement to SCC. Hang in there with us throughout his upcoming days so we can support you through what some of us have already been through. HAGD!!
My son Chris bought a TV over the weekend. He wonders if he can add services to the basic cable they are offered by the base? Has anyone had experience with this?
Hi Robin and WELCOME...I'm so glad I found you on the GM site and you decided to join us over here. You might want to post your question about the TV on the main site here; I think you will have a better chance to get it answered there when Will signs on today. Let us know at what stage Chris is in in his training. The more info you can give us will help us answer your questions. So, again welcome to our extended Navy family. Remember no question is a dumb question on here. Vee
hi this is rose my grand son ted grad gl on aug 28 ship 6 div 941 yeah ....he sure looked good ..says he transfers to gunners a school tuesday..not sure of anything else yet..but he does play soccer at home...
Hi Rose...another grandmother to join us. WELCOME to our little extended Navy family. Congrats on Ted's PIR Friday and he will be going to the A school side soon. If you read the posts from the GM people on this discussion, you will get detailed info on what to expect.....How he will progress through his schooling and, oh yes, the HOLD times. I can't be specific as to what the hold times are for GMs at this point because they do change and seem to be getting shorter...but I can't promise. He will first go into I.N.D.O.C., then Phase 2, then S.C.C. The hold times seem to come after completion of S.C.C. before they start A.T.T. Let me know if you have any other questions after you read some of the posts here. The ones of us who have sailors who have made it to or through A School are: Gary T., Bill Sick, Theresa, Karen C., and myself. These are the people who are still active in this forum. So, hang in there for the long haul and always be supportive of your grandson. You might want to ask some questions on the main site and remember no question is a dumb question. Glad you found us.....Have a good evening. Vee
thanks for the info..you helped a lot
