The purpose of this forum is designed to inform those parents of sailors who aspire to the rate of GM. It is intended to aide parents with what to expect once their sailor graduates boot camp (BC)..also known as PIR, and moves to the A-School side of the base. Questions will be answered by the family of sailors who are training to be GMs. If we don't have the answers, we will get them for you.

Please introduce yourself if your sailor is in the GM rate and provide background on your sailor so that we can get to know you. If you have specific questions about these ratings, and you ask them here, Will and Hoppi will be able to answer your questions. This will help all of us because the answers won't disappear pages down in the general forum.

I want to give Gary T. credit for this great idea; he just hired me as his secretary to put it together. So, jump in and we hope this will be helpful to all of you.

Darcy, so sorry to here about Dev's great Grandmother. I do not know of any protocol which requires Dev to wear his uniform for the funeral. He will be home on leave (free time). The uniform would be a nice touch to wear out of respect for her. I would say it is entirely up to Dev what he wants to wear. I think the uniform issue is one they enforce after basic while on liberty and prior to phase 2 in and around the base. My mother is 96 in a nursing home. I think if she were to pass I would love to see my son wearing his uniform. All and all I think it is a personal choice.

Yes I will keep you appraised of what happens in C-School. It will be a learning experience all over again. Farther from home this time. I will be driving to San Diego with Nick and will report back. I forgot to ask what part of North Dakota are you from? In the Air Force I started out in Glasgow Montana, then Grand Forks ND before going over seas to Vietnam and Thailand. 66-70 Gary T.
Hello and Merry Christmas to all of our mothers and fathers in our GM group. May your holidays be filled with cheer, may you all get everything you have wished for and above all may your sailors remain safe and in good health through out this holiday season and there military careers.

My son Nicholas will be leaving Great Lakes in January for V.L.S. C-School in San Diego, Calif. then onto to Hawaii in May. Just because he will be gone from Great Lakes doesn't mean I will abandon the A-School group or the GM group. I know my good friend Vee feels the same way about this group as I do. I do believe we will be here to answer any questions we can. GM's are a family and Vee's grandson and my son are moving along to another phase. Soon we will be able to answer any questions ref: V.L.S. C-School and the San Diego area. Please feel free to count on me as a friend. I know I have made many during my time here.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Gary T.
I second Gary's wishes and prayers. I too will be here if anyone has any questions. I may be able to shed some light on the C School side as my son is currently doing his in Virginia Beach at Dam Neck Naval base for VLS also. Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas to our extended family. Godspeed to our Sailors. HOOYAA!!
Hi Adri1120, If you go back to the first page in this forum you will find most of your answers. The time line has change quite a bit but it will give a guide line as to classes and what to expect and who to go to for answers. Merry Christmas and enjoy your ride here at Navy Moms. Bill S a Navy Dad.
Hello Adri1120....Bill S gave you excellent advice to go back and check out the early pages of this forum. Like he said, the time line has changed a bit, but it will get you started in the right direction. If you don't mind letting me know your first name and your daughter's first name, I'll add you to the GM roster on here. Merry Christmas to you and your family. Big Navy Grandma Hugs, Vee
hi vee maybe you can help ...our grandson saod at gl for christmas this year we sent him a pk...that would only take 3 days..it has been over a week ..he tells us they will not open the mail room because no one is quilified..can this be true..all his goodies and presents sit until january....rose
forgot to say he id gm school
Rosemary, I do not have an answer for you. I do know with the base shutting down and all remaining sailors moved to a few ships (barracks) it may be hard for any mail to get to a sailor. I can only say if he was on one of the ships closed for Christmas and moved to another ship it would be an impossible task to direct mail to a specific location. I would be inclined to agree he may have to wait til the base reopens. The only way to solve a problem like this is to try and obtain a mail box at the base post office. Hope I helped. Gary T.
Hi Rosemary, I will have to agree with Gary T. I'm suspecting your grandson will have to wait til after the base reopens to get his presents and I'm sorry this has happened to you. My grandson has mentioned that the mail service leaves a bit to be desired. He will have an extended Christmas this way. You have a Merry Christmas! I am in Georgia visiting family, so mine will be outstanding this year. Hugs, Vee
Well its official, my son Nicholas is no longer a part of Great Lakes. Nick left this Thursday 14/Jan/10. One year and one day to the date he arrived. He is now home for two weeks. We will then be driving to San Diego for his C-School. Hopefully he will remain on track and report to his ship in Hawaii on May 20th. Gary T.
Hi everyone, enjoy your time with Nick, Gary. Brett has been just slamming along at Dam Neck. He was finally frocked Monday the 11th. He said the ceremony was short and sweet. He is loving having his crows!! There are recruits down there and he has already had a couple of them address him. My how things have changed in just a year. He and his wife had a baby girl on the 26th of December and all is well. He reports to his ship in April. He says "Hi" to everyone and thanks for the support and keeping his Mom and Dad out of his hair! LOL I will check in later. Godspeed to our Sailors
Hi there Bill.....Congratulations two-fold....first to Brett for getting frocked....and second on the new baby granddaughter. Please give my thanks to Brett for serving our country and wish him well during the rest of his career in the US Navy. Your friend, Vee
