The purpose of this forum is designed to inform those parents of sailors who aspire to the rate of GM. It is intended to aide parents with what to expect once their sailor graduates boot camp (BC)..also known as PIR, and moves to the A-School side of the base. Questions will be answered by the family of sailors who are training to be GMs. If we don't have the answers, we will get them for you.

Please introduce yourself if your sailor is in the GM rate and provide background on your sailor so that we can get to know you. If you have specific questions about these ratings, and you ask them here, Will and Hoppi will be able to answer your questions. This will help all of us because the answers won't disappear pages down in the general forum.

I want to give Gary T. credit for this great idea; he just hired me as his secretary to put it together. So, jump in and we hope this will be helpful to all of you.

Oh ok, understood. During this time period, did you get to see him much?
Kelly, during the early going after he attained his Phase 2 (right to wear civilian clothing and spend week end off base) he would come home every fourth week end. We only live 127 miles from base well with in the 300 mile restriction. During the summer he was placed on dog duty which meant one week end out of four he worked and three he played. They have since did away with dog duty and have returned to the one week end a month liberty. Usually a sailor has duty each fourth day so over a month one full week end with out duty is available. Gary T.
I think HOLD times have been shortened some, at least for Gunner's Mate. Tyler entered bootcamp on June 16, 2009 and should finish GM A-school on January 28, 2010. Of course, we don't know how long he will wait to deploy to Gulfport, MS. We are awaiting hard orders with a deployment date.
Joanie, how did Tyler get orders so quickly? No other class prior to Nicks had assignments until the tenth week of A-School when they chose them according to class ranking. Once they chose the orders they had a copy of choice but the hard copy didn't come until weeks later. Gary T.
Don't know how this happened so quickly, but they chose orders on Jan 11th , according to GPA. We are still awaiting hard orders with dates. Tyler said they told them hard orders would come in appx 2-4 weeks.
It took Michael 7 weeks to get the hard copy of his orders.
Joanie, this is good to hear about the shorter hold times. Good luck to Tyler on his next stage in the Navy. Keep us informed. Hugs, Vee
Thanks, Gary, for holding down the fort....Great answers and help you gave to Kelly and I know she appreciates it. I'll try to be a little more active on here when I get my new computer which should be soon. It is being set up for me right now.....Take care.
Hi Kelly and WELCOME to our GM forum....In your spare time, you might want to read back through some of the posts on here to get an idea what is ahead of you. Remembering of course that things do change in the Navy. My grandson was in GL for a total of 13 months from day 1 of BootCamp until he finished his A School and got his orders for San Diego for VLS C School. He reported to San Diego the 10th of this month and is on hold again until he classes up for C School. Thank you for serving our wonderful country and the best of luck to you as you start your Navy career.....Big Navy Grandma Hugs, Vee
Thank you for the warm welcome. You have been very helpful to me. I've been reading the thread & educating myself on what to expect. I feel a lot better now with all the information that you've provided me with. And it is greatly appreciated. Not all people are meant to serve or can handle it, but I feel that I am one that can step up to the challenge. So you are very welcomed for my future service. It's support from people like you that makes it all worth wild. Thank you for the Big Navy Grandma Hug! I'm sending you a future sailor hug back at you!
-Kelly
I guess it's a miracle, but Tyler got his hard orders today. He could leave GL on Feb 1st, but has chosen to stay until Feb. 10th...so he wont go in hole with leave so much.....He'll be home on leave until he reports to Gulfport on Feb. 23rd. He said most everyone who will be stateside got their hard orders today.
Joanie congratulations to Tyler. He is moving along faster then my son. He should be closer to home. Gary T.
