There seems to be so many of you lately!!! It is wonderful that you will have each other's support while going thru the process together.

Thought I would start this thread so you can at least connect and share stories together. Seems like there is a fair amount of you in Great Lakes and just as many more trying to decide if you can more to Great Lakes.

Yes, it does depend on the division. My husband got 3 calls total while he was in. The "I'm here" call, the call about 4 weeks in, and the "I'm a Sailor" call. Usually letters came on Thursdays for me, but there were 2 weeks out of the 9 weeks that he couldn't mail for one reason or another.

Courtney, we are leaving for GL this Thursday to! Just going up for a visit for the weekend. When we were there for PIR on the 12th, it was cold, but we were fine in a heavy coat and jeans. Luckily, it was sunny that weekend, so during the day it was nice. I think it's supposed to be sunny this coming up weekend also, although they're supposed to get up to 10 inches of snow tonight and tomorrow.
Hi ladies, my husbands in bootcamp and graduates march 5th. He just got his orders, he's an ET!
Mine got his unofficial orders also, he is an ET...when are you moving to GL?
I'm leaving march 2nd and should be there mid day the 3rd!!!
I think if you have thermals and a jacket you should be good. You have to walk a little bit from where you park in the parking lot, to where you get to walk into the hall for graduation. Layers aren't really a must, because once you get inside somewhere, you just get hot and want to take things off.. Navy Pier is a good place to go sightseeing, but since it's cold, you might not want to spend too much time outside. Gurnee Mills Mall is a good place to go, it also has a movie theater and arcade. There are also good places to eat, but they get busy on weekends because of the graduation.

Any other questions you all have, I live in Great Lakes so I have info! [:
Hey! Long time no talk. We just got our ship assignment which is USS Arleigh Burke. Anyone in the Norfolk area now or will be soon? After being cooped in the house so much during the evil Great Mistakes journey, I'm ready to get out and enjoy Virginia! Let me know!
Rys - good to see you stop in. Congrats to Ryan on his Tomahawk orders!!! You will find alot of our ET and FC wives in DamNeck and Norfolk - Kellie is there now. If you have not yet, join the Arleigh Burke group if there is not one - start one. We also have a destroyers group here and it has a list of all the active destroyer groups on N4Ms. Good luck to you and Ryan --- keep us posted on C school life!
Yeah Kellie and I talk via facebook so I've been picking her brain for information ever since we found out we'd be in the Norfolk area. She's been very helpful :).
Heck no!! She can move with him about 4ish weeks after bootcamp....aaaand the navy will pay for it! My husband is an FC and I am living with him.
Have his bride to be join the group if she has not already. Lots of knowledge and support here for the couple. And yes, some recruiters might believe...wives can be distracting. Being a former FC wife, I believe...wives give those sailors a reason to study harder and do a great job!
So many recruiters do not really understand the AECF rate - it is sad. You will learn more in this room than the recruiter will be able to tell you. Not to knock recruiters, they are great sailors but they only know so many rates and AECF is unique in it's schooling, advancement, phases, ability to have a car and family at A school.
They really do try to discourage the married sailors from bringing their wives/families. It's sad. My husband's ship treats live ashore sailors like they're criminals lol. But I do have to say out of his live ashore room and the sailors that have been through there in the last year only about 20% have had distracting wives. The other 80% excelled in their studies.

All depends on the couple I guess!
