Hi Hope, Are you going to be moving to Goose Creek? If so, be sure to check out the group "Nuke School Charleston". There are a lot of young wives there who would give you tips on moving there.
My nuke son graduated bootcamp 2/19 and was not a grad n go. It was wonderful to get to spend the weekend with him, but I could not leave his cell or laptop with him. He left Great Lakes the following week. When he got to Goose Creek, he was put into Indoc for 2 weeks, which is very common, so he didn't have a permanent address for me to send things to. Communication dropped back to worse than bootcamp because he was no longer writing. He and his roommate got a pmb box that I sent his laptop to last week, so that helped a lot! FB became my best friend. ;^) He just got his phone yesterday, YAY.
Sailors who were grad n go got to communicate daily with home from day 1 because they took their cell phones at the airport. This has been wonderful for the moms, wives, and girlfriends. So, there are good and bad to both grad n go and not grad n go. I hope this helps.
From what I hear, the Nukes are almost always grad and go. My son's PIR came over Labor day weekend, so he lucked out that he was able to visit with us over the weekend, after he reported to his next command. He had to leave to report to his command immediately after PIR. Then he was able to meet us for dinner and he had to be back to base by 10 I think, but he wanted to make sure he was early, they have a long walk from where you drop them off, and they can't be late.

He left for the airport at 3am (well was supposed to) so we checked out of the Navy Lodge and took a room at the Marriott hotel at the airport. It just happened to be almost right across the way from the USO and the terminal (United) where he was leaving from. We left some things (laptop, cell phone) for him at the USO, but he wasn't able to pick them up there because he was late (somehow the bus didn't come to pick them up), so I went and got them. They were real nice at the airport, they let us get gate passes (go up to the desk and show them your license and because they are in uniform they let the family go thru to the gate). You still have to go thru security, etc., but it's nice to get that extra time to be with them and say goodbye.
I've heard other mom's tell me they leave for the airport right after PIR, so it really varies. After he got to GC he was on hold waiting to 'class up' so I don't remember exactly when he started, but I think it was 2 weeks after he got there.
My son was scheduled to leave on the 20th early morning but I found out yesterday afternoon his flight might be delayed until Sunday morning. It is something to do with the flights out of Chicago. So I might get an extra day with him :)
Thank you everyone for the good information. It really helps alot. There are 6 div in front of him so if the first two going first, maybe he has a shot at spending the weekend with us. This would be great!!
