There seems to be so many of you lately!!! It is wonderful that you will have each other's support while going thru the process together.

Thought I would start this thread so you can at least connect and share stories together. Seems like there is a fair amount of you in Great Lakes and just as many more trying to decide if you can more to Great Lakes.

Well said Misty, I completly agree!!!! Like Misty said, use the site to help you and ask lots of questions here. So many people have gone through what you are going through and had to make the decision you are trying to make all with different outcomes.

Good luck on your decision and remember in the end, its you and your family that has to live with it. :-)
If your husband has a short school for FC, say Tomahawk, my friend just did this...
her husband got orders to VA for c school for Tomahawk, which is about 3 months, at the same time he got, i believe what they call follow on orders to a different base in VA, the bases are very close together. The navy moved his wife and daughter, to VA and they chose to live off base somwhere in between the two bases. The navy came and packed their stuff drove it out there etc.... They already found out that he will be deloyed pretty soon after he is done with C school as I believe the ship her husband will be attached to after c school is deploying.

I also have another friend who's husband is an FC and his orders were for AEGIS, c school is about 6 months long they moved him and his family to VA for this c school as he does not know/has not picked orders for his permanent duty station. They left in December and are thinking they will be gone the end of July.

Secnario 3, I also have a friend who's husband is and ET and thy are actually moving this week. His C school is in VA, but it is a short one,i think 3 months, his follow on orders are for San Diego.... He is taking a couple weeks leave, the navy is moving their stuff to San Diego and they are having it put it in storage, he is going to Texas with is wife and 3 kids for couple weeks, then flying to VA for C School, his wife is staying in Texas with family until he is done. When he is finished they will move to San Diego. She could have stayed in GL but wanted to be by family. None of her kids are in school and she does not work, so she does not have anything keeping her in GL.

My husband wants AEGIS so we will end up in VA, if those orders are available hen he picks, and it is longer than 6 months so we are moving with him. My daughter does start kindgergarden this year so we hope we have orders before school starts and we will probably be in VA until school is out, as the specific AEGIS he wants is I think around 7-9 months, sorry cant remember.

Anyway, I hope this helps, these are just some of the scenarios I have seen in the last 6 months or so. Have a great day everyone!
AprilV ---- listen to the ladies in this group before you listen to Family services. These gals are tried and true and can speak from the same shoes that you are wearing. Of course the Navy might discourage you from moving and they can say it's so expensive but if you are qualified to move and can be reimbursed for the expenses - do what is best for YOUR family.

Camille, I like how you spelled out the three different scenerios as any of them could come into play but I think the moral of the story is - you can make it work it you need to. We are going thru a similiar situation with our daughter, her hubby is in Iraq and will be back soon because they got married after he reported to his command no assistance with the move - his base is 18 hours away from her so they are talking about making the move via a uhaul - that's gonna be an expensive trip but it's time for them to be together so we will support that decision.
Do Ets have the option to do AEGIS or is that only for FCs? I know I still have a while before i need to start worrying since my husband just started ATT about 3 weeks ago but im already stressing over our next move. I dont want to stay in great lakes without josh, i dont work and we have no kids so theres nothing holding me here. If his C school is less than 6 months then i cant move with him i understand that, i heard that ETs often get there orders for ther first duty station and for C school at the same time, how true is that? What are some of the C school locations? Im hoping we end up in virginia since we are from new jersey we will be closer to family. I also hear that ETs often get deployed asap after getting to their first duty station how true is that?

If anyone has any advice past exsperiences anything that could shed some light on ETs I would greatly appreciate the help!
I don't have too much experience with ET, sorry, but from reading through some of the posts, i think most of the ET c schools are short, but I believe they usually have follow on orders attached, but not necessarily to the same area. There is nothing to stop you from moving over there, but the Navy won't pay for it unless its longer than 6 months. I know there are some other wifes that have ET husbands on here, maybe they can help out better.
Ditto, you must stand up for yourselves and true they will not just give you anythng you have to ask for sure. for example, we have 3 kid and they tried to put us in a 2 bedroom, (1 daughter and 2 sons) they tried to say i was because my youngest was only 6 months old. BUT my husband was persistent and they voila... they gave us a 3 bedroom, thank goodness because 2 bedrooms would have been very tight.
Like Mary said the moral of my stories was definately to say if you want it to happen you can make it work, whatever your decision.
Mary... good luck to your daughter and the move, thanks to her hubby for serving in Iraq, its def not easy over there, my brother in law just got back from afghanistan a couple months ago... my heart goes out...
Just wanted to add something. I am loving it here in GL and have no regrets about moving. My husband wanted us to be with him. I made the decision to put him first. We sold one of our vehicles to pay for the move. (we received reimbersement for DITY move a few months later.)
There is so much to do here with the kids. One of the thing I love is the parks and forest preserves. They are so beautiful. And fee for military. I'm from Southern California and I have to be honest, I don't want to go back.
I am enjoying every day and spending much needed quality time with my husband.
Gurnee is a good place to start looking. My husband did most of the apartment research. He started by visiting the Fleet and Family office. They emailed a list of military friendly apartments. That is how we found our place.
My husband finish phases of liberty and Live Ashore papers and the first part of ATT before we even moved here. He took 2 wks leave after ATT while he was on hold. During that time he flew to Cali to help pack boxes and get everything ready before the moving company. Then we all piled in our car and drove to Illinois. With 3 kids it took us 4 days.
The navy will deposit part of the estimated cost of the move into your account before you leave. We were able to pay the moving company the money they needed upfront. We sold our car because we did not have enough money in our savings to pay for all of the other expenses. If you do a DITY move, keep all receipts of all expenses during the move. Your husband must go to the briefing/class for DITY moves in order to be reimbursed later on. Make copies of receipts also. We had to file for reimbursement twice because the office lost our papers (supposedly).
Where in Southern California are you from?
We are from Riverside.
I live by San Pedro, in a city called Torrance. What a small world! I love hearing about people that live in SoCal. It's a big difference here in Illinois!

Karissa, although you don't have enough money saved up, just thoought I'd tell you- I moved my husband and I from SoCal to here. My dad and I drove my husbands truck with a uHaul trailer hitched to the back. We paid $850 for the trailer, and probably around $500 or so for gas with the truck. I believe we carried about 2000 pounds? In the end, after all the DITY paper work had been processed, my husband and I got $4500 for making the move. So we actually made money! Just wanted to let you know [:
My sons and I are moving to Gurnee this Friday!!! I am so excited...My husband wanted us out here asap. We are so excited to be together and like my husband said why be apart when you dont have to be deployments will take care of that part so enjoy the time you have together. Good luck to all the others in the process of moving as well...Hope it goes smoothly.
For all you ladies who just moved to Illinois or are getting ready to move...do you know about how long the wait list for base housing is and what is better living off base or on. I have an 11 month son and will be moving to GL hopefully sometime by the end of June early July. Any information will be helpful.
