There seems to be so many of you lately!!! It is wonderful that you will have each other's support while going thru the process together.

Thought I would start this thread so you can at least connect and share stories together. Seems like there is a fair amount of you in Great Lakes and just as many more trying to decide if you can more to Great Lakes.

i live off base in a complex called woodlake apartments. It is in Gurnee, about 10 minutes from base roughly 7-8 miles. It is really nice and close to a ton of stuff. I have been told base housing is not as nice as the apartments I and other wives stay. The actual base itself is not in a good area and the housing is near it so for a family I would say to search in gurnee.
My son was PIR 5/7 so I'm trying to change from being a boot camp mom to being a A school mom. Please be patient with me but I don't know what is an AECF?
new aecf wife :) my husband leaves july 8 for bootcamp! he's so excited. i'm happy to hear there are other wives that move to be with their sailor. my husband's recruiter isn't exactly the most enthusiastic guy about finding information for him - so i wasn't sure if i would be able to move. also good to see some faces that will be in GL!

T-wifey- it is possible, but it depends on how long his hold time is. My husband was supposed to be on hold for 4 months, but ended up only being on hold for 1 month. Our plan was for him to take leave to help us move, but they classed him up about 2 weeks before he was supposed to come home. My friend's husband was able to come home and help her move, but it was a lot of paperwork, and at first they told him no.
Can someone explain to me a 'live ashore package'. My daughter has not mentioned this when talking with her Sailor. Thanks =]
Married sailors must request to live offbase while in training status at Great Lakes, it is not automatic. The Live Ashore packet is the paperwork they must complete once they have checked into A school. They must also complete their liberty phases and be at phase two in order to submit the packet. I think they can get their hands on it and begin it in phase one, but it won't be approved before phase two. Sorry I don't have more detail about it than that.
Any wives here who are residing in the GL area while their Sailor is doing A school? I am wondering where the best areas are for renting....any names or directions would be helpful. My daughter is looking at possibly moving. I am trying to help her hunt for a place. She and her Sailor do have a Boxer. Thanks =)
woodlake apartments in gurnee is very nice. close to a lot of things and a safe area. I live there and they allow pets. they have discounts too check them out.
Okay.. I have a question, and im sure the answer is probably somewhere on here but I'm too lazy to look through 46 pages worth of posts for the answer lol. Okay, so I was over on the Great Lakes A School board and I saw some GFs of HMs going to A school at Great Lakes and they said that even though their sailors couldn't leave base, they could go and visit with their sailors on base.. I was just wondering if the same were true for sailors on our side of the base too..
Oh that's awesome! I'm thinking about going back to GL once he gets settled in at A school to visit with him. I was thinking I wouldn't get to see him again until he was phase 2 and could come off of the base..
