OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

My sailors name is not the same. May I ask why it would be a problem. thanks
Bootcamp can last from 7½ to 9 weeks, depending how fast the division fills up. My son was one of the last to arrive so he only did 7½ weeks, whereas some of the recruits who had been waiting for the rest to arrive ended up doing 9 weeks. You'll be given the exact date 2-3 weeks before they graduate.
For security reasons we do not give sailors last names. We also don't give ship movements, date of deployment, etc. This is a public site and anyone can access the info, including people who may not wish us well.

Also, I have been chastised for telling you that you wouldn't get the official info about the PIR date until 2-3 weeks before. Evidently that has changed since my son went through boot camp and you now should receive it earlier.
Thank you Chris
HI!

What Chris is referring to is called OPSEC ... short for Operational Security. There are good discussions about this concept here. If you can't find one, just holler and most of us can provide the links easily. You might think no ones cares about your real name and where you live, but think like a bad guy and you may feel a nickname and a private page make more sense. Entirely up to you, of course.

Pardon me if I seem to be going overboard, but all of us who are prior service get a little worked up over safety of our troops and all their loved ones. You're part of the Navy family now, so I'm kinda like a nosy old aunt who wants you to be safe and happy. (Some would say crazy, LOL).
