My daughter left for basic on May 24th. I already got the "Im here call" I have recieved her box, her form letter and all seemed well to this point but I just got a call from her asking for non relatives phone numbers AND address "for a reference"  SO anybody have any earthly idea what is up with that???  PLEASE give it to me straight, I am big girl and can handle it. LOL  But  I hope she is not having trouble adjusting. I hope its for something good but they keep saying "no news is good news" she didnt elaborate and sounded tired but said she was "okay"  I dont know what to make of it but it does give me pause to be a little nervous about it all.

Probably for her security clearance..depending on what her rate will be.
probably for security clearance for her rate.
Security clearance? I thought they already did all that. In fact a few months before she left her dad and I had to answer a bunch of questions for it. The timing couldnt not have been worse, I was not in a position to look up addresses for anyone on such short notice. Also I already know that 2 of the people she tried to call (I gave her their numbers) didnt pick up because they didnt recognize the number. Seems they could have found a more effient way to handle this such as asking the recruite to bring references with them when they COME to BC. Just a thought. Sorry, I am a little irritated because this now brings me undue STRESS and worry and I think we BC moms have PLENTY of that already!!!!!!!
They will want names of neighbors, former employers, and friends. I have had calls for several background checks of former employees. The agent called for an appointment and asked about the same questions any other employer would - then he began to ask more detailed questions. Many questions about friends, family, after hours activities - that I could not answer. You might want to give employers & friends a call to let them know that they will be getting a call. Also, they need to answer with straight answers: yes, no, I have no information on that. They don’t need to try to be funny.

Some agents are not so professional. My mother had a knock at the door, a lady flashed her badge, said "FBI - I need to talk with you". It scared my mom half to death. Her next door neighbor was about to deploy and they were doing an updated security check (every 5 years). She basically told her – how long they had lived in the house, that she knew his basic job & rank, and that they were good neighbors.
Fluer- are you saying they are JUST now getting around to the IBC AFTER they get to BC and didnt before they offered her rate? Sounds very strange to me.
It's definintely for security clearance and nothing to worry about. We had the same call and even got another call from our daughter last night to confirm the info we had given. It means everything is moving along as planned. Our daughter sounds tired too. No need to fret though!
Tricia- Thank you, I just picked my heart off the ceiling and put it back into my chest! ;)
This is all new to me too but my husband was in the Navy (before we met) so he educates me. I'll share anything else that I learn and we'll all keep each other reassured!
I am sure it will be fine. What is her rate? Maybe they offered her a change in her rate that requires more security clearance. Or they failed to get some of the references taken care of before she left. I know when my daughter got the call from FBI a week or so before she left it really freaked her out. lol Take a deep breath, it will be fine, and you got to hear her voice!!! Yeah...
Some jobs have more security clearance than others. If she is working with computers then she will have additional background checks & other jobs also. Some jobs overseas have additional security clearance.
Lala - yes, thats what it was. My mom also got a call from her for addresses. Her rate is IT so that does make sense. The sad thing I almost didnt recognize her voice. I had to ask if that was her. I hope it didnt upset her. I was taken SO off guard. She immediatly said the call was "just business" But I ask what mom could resist saying "I love you" in the down time scrolling through a different cell looking for numbers? LOL I honestly couldnt see them without my reading glasses (I hate my new phone) so I had to get my 11 year old on the phone to read off the numbers. I also told her I sent lots of letters already. She said, "Good" but didnt elaborate if she had actually recieved them and I knew better than to ask. But I sure hope we didnt get her in any trouble.
She is needing info for her security clearance. We have received 2 calls from our son for the same reason. We haven't had his "real" call so this was a nice, quick call to hear his voice! My son is going into cryptology and needs a high security clearance. They will speaking to your neighbors, her schools, friends, church, etc., etc., etc. How high the clearance all depends on the job...nothing to worry about! From what I can tell, alot of the jobs don't get security started until they get to BC.
