Is your son in OCS? What class number? My son has been there three weeks and he is in 19-10. We have a facebook site that many in the class belong and others there for suport and to answer questions. Check it out it is OCS 19-10 friends and Family. There is one recent addition for the 20-10 class too. Join us lots of support and info.
My Son is in ODS training. Just finished his first of five weeks. He seems to be doing well. I on the other hand miss him terribly. Cannot wait til we travel their for his graduation.
My son is in ODS as well. He is in class 10070-PAPA company, they graduate on Friday! What class is your son in and then what field is he in? Mine is going into Nuclear Engineering, then he will go to D.C. for six months to a year.
Nancy, My Son is in ODS. His class is 10080. Just finished his first week. It was a long hard week for me and him. Miss him alot.
Hi Ladies,
Not to nitpick, but to clear something up.....OCS (Officer Candidate School) is different than ODS (Officer Development School). If you notice how the classes are numbered, you will see they are refered to in different ways. ODS is where lawyers and doctors (among others, I am sure) learn the ways of the Navy.
Maybe Nancy could fill us in on the specifics of ODS. It would be interesting to find out more about it. Not many fom ODS post.
Yes, Officer Development School is very different than Officer Candidate School.
I cut and pasted the following from Wikipedia: A direct commission officer (DCO) is a uniformed officer who has received a commission without the typical prerequisites for achieving a commission.
Civilians who have special skills that are critical to sustaining military operations, supporting troops, health and scientific study may receive what are called "direct commissions." These officers usually occupy leadership positions in the following areas: law, science, medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, nurse corps, intelligence, supply-logistics-transportation, engineering, public affairs, chaplain corps, oceanography, merchant marine affairs, and others.
It is normally a five week program to introduce them to the Navy ways. It used to be called Navy Officer Indoctrination School.
Thanks for the info, Nancy. Never thought of looking at Wiki. I couldn't figure out who, besides the prev mentioned lawyers and doctors, went to ODS.
Patricks Mom,
I did a search for ODS and Officer Development School, and didn't come up with much on this site. We certainly can understand you missing your son. We've all been through OCS, and know how hard it is when your LO is away. Have you heard from him at all? The communication from OCS, in the early part of the class, is very sporadic. We encourage lots of letter writing. Maybe that will help you. How else can we support you while he is away?
Dmarie, Thanks for the info. My Son is in ODS School and I did know the difference in them. He just finished his first of five weeks. He seems to be doing well. Of course we miss the communication with him the most. He just finished his MPH degree, Preventive medicine and Environmental medicine at University of Kentucky and for the most part has been away for the past 6 years but we always had that communication line to him. I did receive an email from him which is a wonderful way to end this otherwise hectic day. Thanks for your support.
Patricks Mom.
They get more freedom after the first week. Andrew has been able to call once or twice a week. We text him a lot and when he can he responds. They have had two weekends of liberty, the first one they had to stay near Newport and then the second they were going to go into Boston. I am going up at the end of this week for his graduation ceremony. I am looking forward to seeing him, although when he was at school I went much longer without seeing him.
Hi Patrick's Mom,

How are you both doing? Are you hearing from him more? Is he working on his third week? It will be over before you know it. Are you planning on going up for the graduation? I went up, for a very short trip but it was worth it. Most of the officers left as quickly as possible. Andrew had to go find a place to live, others had to leave for school, and the rest just left.
Hi to all moms with a child in ODS in Rhode Island. My son went through ODS last November to December. (most people in his company were lawyers, nurses, and dentists, he is a power school instructor) I wish there had been more info out there before he left. It was a short 5 weeks, but I did miss him terribly. Something about not being able to talk to him whenever we wanted to. They received calling "privileges" as the days passed. After the first week, he was able to call for a few minutes each week. We did go to his reception and graduation and really enjoyed it. He was able to come home a few days at Christmas before heading to Goose Creek SC. Most went straight to their next assignment. If there are any other questions I can answer, I'd be glad to give it my best.
