My Sailor is in bootcamp right now, his PIR is July 23rd and he's grad and go. He told me he would probably be leaving the next morning to go to SC. We're planning on getting married, we just don't know when yet. But my question is, once we get married how long will it be before I'll be able to move up there with him? I'm new to all this and not really sure how all that works. Thanks for all the help :)

When my husband and I got married, he moved up about 2 weeks later, but we had to pay for it all since we weren't married when I got there. Not sure if that's what you have to do, but that's what my chief at the time told me. If this is the way it has to be, make sure he is saving his money in boot, because it is EXPENSIVE to move! I'm sure that he could also do a home of record move, but I'm not sure if that means that he has to change his state residency. It doesn't matter if you pay state taxes, but it did for us. I would look into that.
Darla,
When I got there they would not let the non married sailors go to the briefs. Even if you were planning on getting married within a month. My best advice, if you want the navy to let him go to help you, get married on his grad weekend and have a big wedding later. I'm sure that's not really what you want to hear, but it will work out better if you don't want to pay for it. I honestly wish that we had done it that way instead of waiting the month after.
my husband's PIR is the same date. i'm guessing he's a grad and go since he told me he'll be leaving the next morning as well. he also told me that he'll have 2 weeks between graduation and A school. but probably only 2 days to fly up and help me move down (i live in PA).

i'm sure this doesn't really help but we ended up going to the courthouse before he left for boot camp & we're planning on having a bigger wedding later -- very few people (outside the navy) know we're already married. are you planning on going out for PIR? maybe you could get married then -- although i really don't know the rules for that in IL.
I'm definitely going to his PIR, I can hardly wait! Will your husband be in Goose Creek too? I assume so since you're in this group, but I thought I'd ask haha
Yep he is, I'm starting to pack this week. I figure the more I have done before PIR the better.
thanks for the great information ladies :) getting married at the courthouse isn't a huge deal to me, I've always wanted a small wedding anyway. We're still trying to figure out what's the best thing to do, but you guys have helped alot! thanks again!
If you do plan on getting married PIR weekend, make sure he actually can/allowed to. It's highly discouraged. I also think you have to wait 3 days for the paperwork to go through at the courthouse before you can elope so if you do decide to do it, check into that as well.
