Hello,
My Husband recently graduated from Basic and is going through INDOC at Submarine School for SECF. We have been told he will most likely be at Connecticut for about a year. He wants me to move up there with him and wants to live off base. But since he has gotten there he hasn't had a chance to ask anyone on how to go about moving me. We were told by his recuiter that the Navy would not pay for me to move to be with him at his A school but that if he was in a place for more then 6 months I would be allowed to move myself and we could live together off base. But now we've heard that if he takes a moving class of some kind they will move me.....Does the Navy pay just to move our household things or will it pay for my plane ticket and our cat and dog? What kind of paperwork does he need to have, and when should he start it or when can he start it, in order for me to move? Sub school seems to have many parts. He does know that the Navy will not help us until he passes BESS. After BESS he has ATT, is this attached to his final rate (I think that is the term), either ET, FCT, or STS and does that effect the move time too, will he have to wait until that is done for me to move? Will holds make it longer? This whole process is very confusing and I've asked in several different threads but no one has yet to answer me....He is getting very Homesick and is getting frustrated at not being given time to ask his Commanders or anyone there about this, he has been trying for a week and a half. He started to do better in High School and kept up in it when we started dating, so I know having me there won't be a distraction, more of a needed comfort. I'm just worried on how this will begin to effect him....

Someone please help!

The first week or two are very busy, so he needs to know he will have time to ask soon. I think you aren't getting specific answers because no one who has read your question has solid answers.

Whether or not the Navy will pay to move you will depend on the length of his school, which does not include the introductory courses or hold times. They will not pay to move the pets, that is out of your own pocket. If you do move there, then he still must get permission to live off base. I know that at Great Lakes they have to put in a Live Ashore packet. This takes several weeks and they must have earned their liberty privileges. Pretty sure Groton does it in a similar way.

This process could take closer to months than weeks, so take a deep breath and encourage him to be a bit patient and very persistent with his COC (chain of command). It affects him as he allows it to affect him.

Good luck, you'll be there soon enough.
Thank you so much!!!! That helps a bit. You are the first person to actually respond to me on this subject! Everyone else has just ignored me for the last month and a half....I can understand not having true answers, because with the Navy it seems that each person has a different experience. But at least someone talking to me would be nice. I have posted in threads, groups, even on wife/gf specific Sub talks and no one even takes a notice to me...And the idea of going to his old recruiter is out of the question. The guy blew me off, told me he was in a different state which wasn't true, or wouldn't even respond to me at all. All this after telling me my Husband was too fat to join and got lucky and that no one gets the job they want in the Navy. What a great thing for a Recruiter to say especially when you are getting letters from your Husband in BMT and he is highly depressed and wants me to get answers from the guy, right? Sorry hand to Vent a little :)

So He can't put in for the Live Ashore packet until after he receives all his privileges (blue card I think he said?)? So hold time are not included? So if his A school is over 6 months but he will have a hold time of what we are told is a month prior to the classes starting, they won't move me until his hold time is over and he has actually started?
I honestly don't know the timing of moving dependents at Groton. I do know the hold times don't count toward the six months, but if the school is over six months itself, he can get the paperwork going to move you. Moving off base with you comes as it comes, I can't answer that. Do you have everything else for now? ID card, insurance? Because he must put his foot down and get that done, no matter how busy they're trying to keep him. It is a school command, not combat, there is a balance to doing what is necessary.

They can move you before school starts. The nukes do it in Goose Creek, I'd imagine the sub school can do it too.

Look up the area code for Ct, call Fleet and Family Service Center and ask if there is an ombudsman for the training command, and if anyone in the office at FFSC can help you find out how to get started. You cannot get your sailor in trouble for calling the FFSC if you explain he's new and neither of you know what to do! His COC may grumble at him, but you are now part of their responsibility toward Navy families, like it or not. The number is in the link here:

https://www.cnic.navy.mil/NewLondon/BaseSupport/index.htm
Oh, okay I get it now. Thank you so much! Yes, he already got me setup with ID and insurance. I will try to find that number. Thank you again, you're our hero :)
