OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

Tattoos - I thought the Navy invented them?
My daughter (yes, daughter) has several tattoos. One is a family tattoo we all have to remember my nephew that passed at the age of 22. She also has a set of swallows (for the Navy) and an "upper back" tattoo of Chinese lettering that reads: Live Life to the Fullest. My daughter is trying to do that via the Navy.
She went to Houston MEPS 3 times. In order to get her "upper body" aka neck tattoo approved, she eventually had to go to the Houston Commander. Even with her approval, MEPS still gave her trouble. After calling in the Big Guns, she was finally approved and took her oath last week.
Now, her recruiters are saying that she can be sent to boot camp, which isn't until June 2011 (why so dog-gone long?) and STILL be sent home if her tattoo is visible.
The MEPS inspector/approver or whatever you call them, actually pulled her collar down to view her tattoo, which I've heard they "can't" do.
We are looking into lazer removal at $1200 or around $180 a session and I'm buying the wrecking balm fade cream to see if that will work.
MY QUESTION: Has anyone experienced tattoo removal or been approved and then been sent home from boot camp?
I'm new to this and confused at what can and can be done and what she/I can expect from here on out.
Any tatted Moms have advise??????

The Navy has become very picky about a number of things. It's overmanned right now (hence the long wait to get in) and the rules about tattoos have gotten much stricter. It's one thing to have a tattoo on your upper arm but they don't want any on the neck or anywhere else they can be seen when in uniform. My son has 2, one on his stomach and one on his leg....both are covered by his clothes but he still had to have them inspected at MEPS. The rules state that they cannot be visible.
We have a friend who's a dermatologist and he spends a lot of time lasering tattoos. It's not easy getting rid of them, takes time, pain and is expensive.

ART/BRANDS ON THE TORSO AREA OF THE BODY SHALL NOT BE VISIBLE
THROUGH WHITE UNIFORM CLOTHING.

The problem will come in if any portion of her tatt is visible once she gets to boot camp and begins wearing actual uniforms. Pulled down her collar? Depends on what she was wearing, and I'm thinking they didn't have a set of female uniforms for her to try on to check the ink.

Thanks so much. The recruiters said COLLARED shirt and never said anything about t-shirts. Now we know. Just ordered the wrecking balm, so we'll see if that works. Because she's got soooooo long to go, hopefully it will work on fading and then we can buck up for the lazer treatments. She was actually wearing a collared shirt the 2 times they checked her. Regardless, she's in now, and now we wait.
