Liberty and G&G info when PIR is on a THURSDAY!

Heads up: I promised all of you that I get some information about how much liberty time you'll have on a holiday weekend and any news about G&G's as well.

I just heard back from a Mom who had a sailor graduate over the Fourth of July holiday, PIR date was Thurs 7/1. She said that G&G's flew out on Friday and Saturday, and there were a couple (just a couple) who flew out late Thurs night - which is very rare. She said G&G's over to GL A-School moved right after PIR (which is normal) and those kids were able to stay with their families until Sunday night (yes, even overnight - but those are the ONLY ones, which is normal).
She also said that those sailors who were not G&G got the entire weekend for liberty (not overnight), but they had Thurs, Fri, Sat & Sun, and some even got Monday - a chit was required for that day. I wasn't present, so can only go by what one Mom told me this morning. REMEMBER, each sailors experience could be different and the Navy does change things from time to time. Hope this helps!

Hi there...my sons PIR is Thursday 9/2...he called me Friday night and said he is not leaving Great Lakes until the following TUESDAY, the 7th of Sept! I'm sure this isn't the case for everyone, but he is Ship 06...DIV 942 :)

Hi Crystal, then he is not a G&G, so you'll get to see him each day that weekend, but not have him overnight. Beware though, those who are not G&G often have "watch duty" for a couple of hrs one day over PIR weekend, so keep your plans flexible and don't buy tickets to theme parks or anything like that until you see him on PIR day.

Yeah..he did say he has to be back on base each night by 8pm, we're just planning on some general sightseeing...I do have to see how far he can go though, bc we want to take him to the Harley museam on Friday in Milwaukee...we'll have to wait and see...I'm just so darn excited!

They cannot travel more than 50 miles from RTC, and they are very strict about this. Reasoning behind it is: They are on liberty, not on leave. So if the Navy needs them, they must be able to get back to the base within a certain amount of time, hence the 50 mile limit.

My Daughter too!!!! Amanda is in SHIP06 DIV 942 PIR09/02 and I get to see her all weekend!!! We have to leave Sunday night but I truly cant wait!!!!

Thank you Sobe again for great info. My son will be staying in GL and he phoned today and said he thinks he has the whole weekend. Trying not to get my hopes up but it's hard. :)

Just a heads up to those going to A-School at Great Lakes. Some of the recruits do not realize that they are a G&G, it was a surprise to them, and their parents (but a nice one - those kids get to stay overnight with you!!!). Some recruits think of G&G's as only those who are flying somewhere, which is why they get confused. I highly recommend that you go read the info on the Grad & Go Info group!

So you can be G&G and still be at GL A school

YES, you can be a G&G to Great Lakes A-school. Not all of them are, but quite a few. Grad & Go doesn't always mean "fly out", it just means you "grad and then go" over to a-schl sooner than everyone else. So... IF a sailor tells you they are a G&G to Great Lakes, they have to move there on Friday after PIR ceremony, which does take 5-7 hrs, BUT.... then you get them the entire weekend - which includes overnight!!! No other Grad & Go's get this honor!!! Now... if they are NOT a G&G, but will be a GL for A-school, they won't move over until Monday or Tuesday, which means they have normal liberty hours over PIR weekend and must return to boot camp each night.

Hi my nephew graduated 2 years ago and was able to stay overnight with the family for the whole weekend. Has this rule changed? Or is it different for all recruits, my daughter will be attending A school in Pensacola which is awesome because I live in Florida too, which leads me to a second question.. Will she be able to have her car in A school? her recruiter said yes but im finding out they dont always speak the full truth LOL

If your nephew was a G&G to Great Lakes A-School, then no, the rule has not changed and new sailors can still stay overnight with family and friends PIR weekend. However, if they are a Grad & Go who flys out to their A-School, those sailors do NOT get to spend the night with family that Friday evening.

As far as a car in Pensacola - it really depends on how long A-School is. My son is right next to NASP, at Corry Station and we were told 14 weeks for A-school, but the recruiter didn't tell us that he had Introduction class for a week first (standard at all A-Schools), then there might be a wait to "class-up". Luckily my son waited less than 3 weeks to class up, but some what 3 months!!! Then, we learned that for his rate (IT), they are self paced in their classes, so depending on how motivated he was, he could finish the 14 week course in half the time.

So... what would happen to the car when she is done with A-School??? Sometimes sailors go to C-School somewhere else, sometimes they get stationed immediately. Lots to consider!
