Can you give us a hint about the weather and what to pack? We are so excited to get there and see our son, husband, and nephew.
WHEN IT GETS CLOSER TO GRADUATION I WILL TELL YOU ABOUT THE WEATHER. This is Illinois, the weather changes hot and cool or cold around October. Will keepyou informed.
Thanks, it does the same here.
OK - who from this DIV has any news or has gotten letter or call? I don't understand what is taking so long?!?!?
Well ladies get excited, I told you guys when I got home from Oparh, ther would be a letter. As soon as I got out of the studio, I called home and my husband told me we finally got a letter. My son Eric says he picked weeds the very first day, He hates I.T. , but knows he will be o.k. He had four years of band, and he said it paid off. They do alot of marching. One thing he said was he still won't make his bed if he gets a chance to be home.(haha).Well I'm so glad the letter sounded like he will be find. It was a great relief to her from him. Hope you can share your stories soon, hang in there. Carol
I got a letter today! Tyler didn't say much but he did say he is doing ALOT of marching and shining of his boots! He said there is alot of yelling and misses his freedom (made me sad to hear that) As of 8-27 he was PFC in his Division (do not know what that means) but did not know how long that would last. Also complained about time limitations in the bathroom (lol) 3 minutes is all they are allowed--guess no time to read LOL. I was hoping for more information but he has always been that way you have to drag it out of him. Looking forward to the next letter. Hope you get one!
Hi everyone! I haven't posted in a while, but I don't really have anything to say! My SR has not called, nor have I gotten a letter from him yet. Maybe today? I'll share any info I get. Thank you to those who have gotten a letter and shared. At east I know what my SR's been up to! LOL! My SR did lots of yard work at home, and grumbled when he had to pull weeds here! I could just imagine him at BC doing it... but hopefully he didn't grumble. Mine didn't make his bed unless someone was coming over! As for the bathroom time... we got him used to that here... he has 3 sisters... and they shared the one bathroom.
On another note, I am learning quickly about the 'phone cards' issues. I'm not too good at that stuff. But, my mother in law worked for 10 yrs at a company that sold them. I sent my SR off to BC with an at&t 600 min card. NOW she tells me how they work. Using it from a pay phone deducts additional time. If he doesnt use it daily, it also deducts time. Oh... and NOW she tells me I should have copied the info on the card before he left. (Why is her insight so delayed????) Anyway, her suggestion was to send cards with less minutes, like a 60 min card. Send several of them. This way, they are cheaper, and if they 'die' in between the times they can call home, it doesn't matter. A 60 min card may give the SR about a half hour of actual phone time. Personally I think the card companies are crooks, but thats for another forum. LOL!
I wonder if our SR's can call collect from the pay phones there? May be a bit more cost effective and less of a hassle trying to locate the cards to send him? Anyone know if they can do that?
navygf: Only your SR will know if he is grad and go. It depends upon when/where his A school begins from what I understand. It will not be on the actual form letter. They usually find out about 2 weeks before PIR. Some know sooner, some find out 3 days before... but on average, its 2 weeks before. They usually tell you via letter/call. According to some 'veteran mom's' , I've heard that normally the first 2 div formed are grad and go's. However, that's not a steadfast rule. Div 340 was apparently the last div formed... and is known as a PUSH div. That basically means... they have 7 weeks to do what the rest are doing in 8.
Well, this week is over, and I think they had Marlinspike. Next week is firearms training!
Stay the course girls... we can do this!
So Division 340 is a push division? I thought the PIR date was suppose to be 8/16 when my son joined so I guess that is why it is a week earlier?
Hoping for a letter today or maybe a phone call. It has been so long. I have been hearing about other lucky Moms getting letters but we are way out in Oregon so maybe it is taking longer to get here.
Does anyone know if the have A school at Great Lakes, if they would or would not be grab and go?
Hi Nala! The P-days (processing days) are the first few days they are there at GL. ( That would be the Aug 16th-Aug20th for most of the SR's in this div). The PIR date is when they finish BC and 'graduate'. Since they technically started actual training I believe on the 22nd of Aug, yet still have a PIR of 10/8 that only leaves 7 weeks. Most of the div's were well into their first week of BC already. So our SR's will have to accomplish just as much in a little less time. But we raised strong kids, and with our support, they can do it!
A school varies for recruits. Mine is a NUKE, so he should be going to SC. Some will stay at GL for A school. It all depends upon the job they have, and where the school they will go to to learn that job is located.
As for grad and go (G&G), its different for each SR. Again, it depends upon when their schooling begins. Only your SR will know if they will be G&G, and hopefully 2 weeks prior to PIR.
No letter today for me either... sigh... maybe tomorrow? Thanks to everyone who shared!
Tylersmom: PFC usually means Private First Class. That's (from my understanding) an E-3. What course of study will he be doing for A school? My SR told me that those with certain jobs will rank at an E-3 faster than others. My SR is a NUKE. According to his paperwork, it mentioned something about being an E-3 during BC too. Now my curiosity is peaked... something new to investigate... Have to keep up with these terms so we can actually hold a conversation with our SR's at PIR! LOL
He is going for Master At Arms his A school is in San Antonio at Lackland AFB. Thanks for the info!
Just reading through the other groups, and read about someone sending cookies/goodies to a SR! I knew we can't sent that stuff, and made a point when giving out my SR's address to family/friends letters/cards ONLY. Apparently, someone in our PIR didn't know this, and sent a goodie package with good intentions. The RDC will eat them in front of the SR's while they do push ups... I'm sure that SR is feeling some serious 'hating' from his shipmates! Not good for the 'team effort'. Just thought I'd share a reminder to remind others when we give out our SR's info, to stress the importance of the letter/card only policy!
