I have been reading through the various discussions and was somewhat surprised by the sorrow in many of the mom's postings. My daughter just finished basic and is now at A-school in San Antonio. She signed up as a "Master of Arms". I did not realize until I researched around just how dangerous of a job that could be and that she could get sent over to Afghanistan, or Iraq. Although that does concern me, I find that I am not only a proud Navy mom, but very excited for my daughter. She is having a great time, is pleased with her decision to join, and is looking forward to being shipped off someplace. Her dream location would be Japan - -she's dreamed of not only going to Japan -- but LIViNG there -- since she was very young. She's always been fascinated with the Japanese culture. So I find myself not saddened by the "loss" of my daughter to the Navy, but excited for the many potential opportunties that will be offered to her as she begins her journey. And I do realize some of those same opportunities could be very dangerous....
And for now, I still get to talk to her whenever I want and can visit her soon. Maybe down the road I will not be so excited, but for now, I am really excited for her and proud of her too.

That is AWESOME!! My daughter wanted to be a MA. She has a criminal justice degree!
Thanks so much Karen.
I am just so happy that she is loving it. I think she realizes everyday that she made the right decision. She talks to friends from school and who are either working jobs or in college and they ask her how they can join. Life is not as easy as they had expected and that again reassures her of her right choice. I hope she can make chief one day, not sure Italy is in the books but she would love it if it was. Thanks always for the support. Cindy
you may be reading the anxiety of the unknown by Mothers. I went through bootcamp and had a great time in the Navy years ago. I am still nervous with my son leaving for bootcamp even though I know in my heart he has made a great choice. I am very proud of my son . But I will always be Mom and will worry even when I shouldn't.
Great to hear your outlook on this. I know when my boy when to boot camp on 3/12/12 all my family asked me "why aren't you crying." I was happy that he chose this path. I think that it will make him grow in every way possible. I have heard from him by letter once and he reported that he had been put on SIQ (sick in quarters) and was waiting to get back to his learning and PT. It concerns me that this might delay his graduation but I'm crossing my fingers it won't.
I am from a Military family and now my son has followed what his grandpa and Uncle did when they graduated from school.
SERVED THEIR COUNTRY.
