My husband and I just got married july 31st. He leaves for basic nov.9th. Too soon for me ): I am very worried about the fiancial aspect when he leaves. He is the sole bread winner for our family. How will I support our bills? Does his paychecks come home to me? Or do I need to look for a couple jobs to support myself? I know in the end the navy will help us health benefits etc but what do I do for the 3 months he's gone? Any advice would be great!!

this really helped me understand several things! thank you!!
his paychecks can be direct deposited into your guys account and that way you should get paid on the normal pay days. But also for your sanity.. you might want to get a job to keep you busy while he is gone, and it will give you some extra cash as well..
Hello:) My husband just finished basic and is now in BESS, in Groton CT. (Basic Enlisted Submarine School) I can tell you what we did and maybe it will help you. We saved up 2 months worth of living expenses and I moved to the inlaws so they could help with our new baby. If you open a joint Navy Federal Checking account he should be able to take the account number with him to basic and not have to go through that process while he is there.

The reason to open the account before he leaves is because you will already have the info and when his 1st paycheck goes in, you can have immediate access. This for us, happened sometime in the 2nd month. Since my hubby and I didn't do this, I didn't have access to the account until he graduated basic. We filled out a paper to make me a joint on the account b/c I pay the bills, but this was lost ..and I withdrew from another account to cover month 3's bills.

As far as finances in the navy go..you should get separation pay after 30 days of him being gone, which is $250 a month, BAH, which you can look online based on where you live, not where your husband is...this will all be on his paycheck. The first check will be smaller because it isn't for a whole month, and they take out money for his uniforms.

I wish you the best...congrats and be strong!! Spend as much time with him as possible before he leaves.
One of the challenges to being a new navy spouse is navigating all the services and resources available to you. For anything financial, check out Navy Marine Corp Relief Society at NMCRS.org
They should be able to help with financial planning and budgets. If you come up short one month they might be able to assist you with an interest free loan or grant. So give them a call if needed.
