I thought it would be nice to start a discussion for our children leaving the week of October 25th 2010.  Welcome everyone.  Kathy

I feel exactly the same Elizabeth; going forward, when Adam is in BC and I'm feeling disconnected I know where I can go to get the support I need. I have some great, great friends where I live, BUT their words of wisdom have often been "its no different than my son being away at college." It is different. I don't expect my GFs here to get that so I am turning to Navy4Moms.
Lori...I am so sorry to hear that someone has compared going into the Navy to going away to college.....I think sometimes people really don't know what to say and that may be the best comparison they have. I have a really great group of friends some of which I know not to talk Navy with for fear they may say something that will upset me and not realize it. Don't worry, girl we are here for you :o)
Your, Adam is going into Subs? My son, Taylor is also....
Hey Lori, I hope I didn't upset or offend you with my PIR Group comment. It was only informational, (I know we have some newer members reading along now) not intending to take anything away from the wonderful connections and friendships that you are all making here. Just warms my heart to see that happening so early on and it's exactly why Michelle started these Groups, so she'd be thrilled too! =)

I have a very dear friend who I met here onsite, Comments on pages and common groups moved to PMs, sharing more detailed things, then texts and calls. We shared our ups and downs with our Sailors and then family stuff & life in general. Finally, I had some free air mileage and she invited me to come to her N4Ms State Group's next gathering of Moms. I jumped at the chance. :) Even stayed with her, even though we'd never met in person!

It was like seeing an old friend from HS or College, like we'd spent time together before and it was really more like a reunion! We've since shared wedding news, her Sailor was sent to the "sandbox" for deployment, mine started new training and her family had a sad sudden loss, all the kinds of things all good friends share and support each other through, only we know the other really 'gets it" all without the need for explanation like our non Military friends, who we still love too. I'm sure we'll share much more in the days to come, and we didn't even become friends until after BC! I wish you all those kinds of encouraging, long lasting, "I'm here for you" unconditional friendships with other Military Moms, those here and those who you have yet to meet. :-)
Susan, Good luck on the going away party for Drew. I am sure it will be wonderful and let us know how it went.
Lori, Good luck to your youngest son's ASVAB testing. You must be so proud and filled with lots of emotions now. Thank you for adding me as your friend and I also appreciate all the support I have gotten here. You all are great. Kathy
Hi Elizabeth, thank you for adding me as your friend. I have really appreciated the support and caring that I have felt here and I look forward to sharing this experience with you.
Betsy, you stated it right on when you said leaving for college is NOT the same thing. I have sent three kids to college and I never felt the way I am feeling now. My mother doesn't even understand how I am feeling. I am beginning to believe only moms who have had children go into the service can understand the stresses and joy of it. This is why I am so glad I found "navyformoms" and all of you. I believe we all have amazing children and I am so proud of them. Kathy
Kathy, can't agree with you and the other's comments more! College is a big transition for our young people and their parents, won't take that from them, BUT, those "kids" can call-or come-home anytime they want. We still retain control of their travel plans etc. Other than a disgruntled professor or a poor grade, there are no other real penalties. College kids can QUIT anytime they want to too. Our military kids face a court marshal, fines or even jail time if they don't show up for "class" when they are expected to! They may be volunteers, but they've taken an oath to serve. They have given their rights and freedoms away, so those college kids (and us) can retain theirs/ours.

My Sailor went to College first before joining the Navy. The two goodbye's and the circumstances that followed them, were totally different! Not the same AT ALL. :) You are right, only those who have walked this path, truly understand the emotions and experiance. Others may still support and love you through it, (that's a blessing to have) but they just won't quite "get it" like your friends here will. :-)
Susan - so great to hear AND tear free chica? You give me hope; you're my inspiration! My goal is to come away tear free too. Gotta save the tears for when I need them at MEPS! What was your very favorite part of the party - in planning, you're so glad you did?
Excellent plan; we are having our annual pumpkin carving contest on the 24th so we are ordering subs then. :-) We don't have a Sams Club in town, BUT if I print it I think they can make a transer. Love the idea; thanks!
Susan...I am so happy to hear your party was a success (no tears and a great time)...we are having a party for my son on the 16th and doing a backyard BBQ as well, we have my older daughter bringing her cornhole set (I can see the cornhole tournaments now). Last time we had a cornhole tournament going on at our house it was getting dark no one wanted to stop playing so everyone parked their cars so that the headlights light up the playing field, I can only imagine what my neighbors thought....
Elizabeth
I too am wondering what Cornhole is!
Funny, when anyone says cornhole it almost sounds naughty....it is a really fun game and everyone gets into it, almost like a modern day horse shoe game.
