Why are we here? For this reason... Each one of us thinks of something the others don't. What a help you all have been for me. My week is going much better. Thank you!!
well i want one, because we can get low intrest rates on loans n such because were military. theres benefits to having it.
See if you can get one of your parents on your account. It may be needed at some point down the road...
Phoebe,

You must have been reading my mind just now. I just had that conversation with Adam. We are going to the bank today to put me on his savings and checking.
He said "Ok, mom I trust you. LOL

Betsy
Ashleigh,

I have been told by Adam's recruiter and my daughter's bf (in the Navy) that the best way to go is USAA. Apparently, they treat the military wonderfully. Your mom & dad could even change to them, since you are in the military. My husband and I are going to switch everything later. We could have done it years ago, because my husband is a government worker, but we didn't find out that until recently.

Here is their website:

https://www.usaa.com/inet/ent_logon/Logon

Adam is going to switch everything later to USAA.
Susan,

You poor thing. You have had a challenging day so far. (((hugs))) I hope it gets better and you are able to celebrate tonight, worry free.

Adam and I went to his credit union a little while ago. He is keeping that account, for now. Once he is out of BC, he will change to USAA. It's just easier this way, since he already has his account numbers for his savings and checking and they will need the checking right away to deposit his paychecks. He added me on his checking account, so that if he does have any bills come up, I can write checks on his account for him. I was already on his savings account, so we didn't have to worry about that. The customer service manager told me that since I am on both of his accounts, I don't need to do a Power of Attorney for them. In the event that anything happens, I would be able to access both of his accounts anyway. The only thing I could not do would be to actually close the accounts, but I could withdraw everything from them. Kinda silly, but that's what she said. lol

I also stopped in to the recruiting office and asked them about whether a Durable Power of Attorney would trump the HIPAA laws. They said that I don't need POA because in the event that anything should happen (God Forbid) as Adam's next of kin, my husband and I would have the right to all decisions regarding his health or burial. Adam told me that he signed all those papers already.

For those of you who are buying bibles. I asked them today, if they would have the space for one. The Chief who was there, told me that they have space for a 3" by 5" bible and not more space than that. The Petty Officer even called me back to tell me where I could find them. He called a view book stores and religious books stores, after I left the office. How nice was that?

I also asked about what size religious metal they could wear, he said "small" and only one. They are so great at his recruiting office.

The Chief also told met that they are definetely looking at the 10th or 17th for PIR, because they are only held on Fridays. He also said that we should get a call by the beginning of the 2nd week of BC. I thought it would be later than that, but he said they usually know by the beginning of the 2nd week.

Betsy
I am throwing this out there to the moms who are reading this and not "talking" on this site (cuz I that's what I would have done). Do any of you have kids going to San Jose on Tuesday 10/26? if so, can you reply to this as that is when I will be there.

I have been reading through all this information. You guys are SO awesome!! so much great information. Time is going so fast!! One week from today for me. Good to know the graduations are only on Fridays Betsy, I was thinking they were every day. This give us a MUCH better chance of landing on the same day. And really, I just can't believe they would send them all out in SIX weeks...that would be terrible.

I have decided to send letters once a week (per info here) and I was talking to Ian's step-mother (cuz WE get along well) and told her to not send too many letters on that end either.

I know that Ian wants to open a Navy checking account, and it's good to know we can get on it too!
Nancy
Lori-
Ian told me he signed a bunch of papers (somewhere-recruiters/MEPS) and he put down his dad on all of them. So I imagine that your son has done the same and just not told you. Apparently not as good as the POA, but since he is not married parents will probably be in charge anyway.
Nancy
Yes they all filled this info out at some point. Since you are the next of kin you will be notified if anything happens. :) Susan
Betsy- It IS very pretty...I thought the same thing about an outfit. Now all they need to do is keep us together. :-)
Nancy
This is TOO funny!! I burst out laughing. Can you just imagine, "And what's your mother's name?"... I am still trying to get Ian to look at the pictures.

I found out today that Ian got in some trouble at DEP and he had to write the General Orders 75 times... Step-mom said he didn't have them memorized (I knew it), but he does now. LOL

I keep trying to tell Ian things, but he thinks he knows everything. I TRIED to tell him about ironing, but he said, "Oh mom, we're not going to iron." HA!! He will be ironing in the middle of the night... I found a good you tube on boot camp and sent it to him. I don't think he will watch it.
Nancy
