I thought it would be nice to start a discussion for our children leaving the week of October 25th 2010.  Welcome everyone.  Kathy

Oh, Susan, my heart goes out to you. It is going to be hard. I know you can get through this though. You helped to make him the independent son he is today and now you can help him to obtain what he wants most of all, to be a sailor. Just remember many moms on this site have had children go through boot camp and have survived as well as their children. I was sitting here tonight myself feeling all wired up and thinking how am I going to get through this. I even thought of pasting Brandons picture to the chair he uses in the family room. This is true. I have already made a folder on my computer titled "letters to Brandon" and even started a letter. I then thought of all the things I can send him like jokes and poems. I am also holding on to the thought that he may be able to come home for Christmas. Big "Hugs" to you. Kathy
Betsy, that is a wonderful idea about putting a letter in his book of Psalms. Are you going to surprise him with the letter? Also thank you for the kind words. You always know just what to say when I can't string a sentence together. What you said to Susan made me feel better too. I am the same way about my children and not being able to sleep until they are safely home. I have to keep reminding myself that they are men now and not kids. That is a great idea about sending cards. I will get some tomorrow. Thank you for not letting me wallow in self pity and to remember why I am here, to support Brandon. Kathy
Kathy,

Thank you, now if I could convince myself that everything is going to be fine, it would be great . lol What I am seeing here, is a wonderful group of moms. The more I get to know you, the more I am feeling more confident in being able to let Adam go. I know it's not going to be easy, trust me and I am totally dreading Monday morning. But, over the last day or two, I've realized that my doubts would only be detrimental to Adam. I don't want that at all. I want him to be confident (and he does seem nervous now).

Yes, I am surprising him with the letter. I'm hoping that he will read it on the plane. I'm not sure if he will be able to keep the book (due to space constraints) but I hope so. I am going to read through the book tomorrow and pick out verses that are pertinent to his life now. I'm then going to bookmark all of those for him to read when he can. He isn't a big reader, so I think the psalms are better than a bible for him. He would never sit and read the bible, but I think he would read short verses.

Btw, you make me feel better too. Thank you for that.

I'm so hoping that we all have the same PIR, I can't wait to meet you.

Betsy
Thank you Betsy and I can't wait to meet you too. You are so right about being positive. Brandon is also very nervous and I can tell he is much calmer when I stay positive. I am also trying to stress the good things about boot camp like the life long friends and the good food and how every one will be experiencing the same thing. Of course I wait until he talks about things before I say anything. Then I mention whatever. Have a nice night. Kathy
Kathy and Betsy,
I was just reading through your comments and I LOVE your ideas. Sometimes I don't plan things ahead of time (well..really usually) and I think that being organized and getting started on cards and letters will be really helpful as a coping mechanism.

I am not finding myself crying much, but my stomach is really upset, and I am feeling stressed. Plus I am running to this site fairly frequently. Reading through your posts makes me feel like I am going to be able to accept the situation. I really appreciate your wisdom and common sense. Good-night. Nancy
Nancy,

I think we are all helping each other on here. It just seems a little bit easier to me now. I think it's because every one of you have the same feelings, fears and anxieties that I do too.

You said that your stomach is upset. I hope you feel better, I guess that's nerves. Would you believe that I have a pimple on my chin and I haven't had one of those in years. lol

Have a good night and i'm sure I'll talk to you tomorrow.

Betsy

Thank you Ashleigh, I will tell Brandon. Have a good day. Kathy
It is so nice to see such a spiritual group of woman here. I love the idea of sending the bit of cloth that you have lovingly prayed over in your child's bible. My daughter did not bring a bible with her but I am hoping she is able to get one there. She did attend a contemporary christian church service this past Sunday and loved it!

My daughter left for boot camp on 10/5. I was expecting her to be graduating on 12/3 but she ended up with a group that had been there for up to 10 days before she arrived and her PIR is 11/24! So it is possible that your sailor could have a PIR of 12/10.

I wish you all the best over the next few days as you get ready to say "see you soon" to your recruits. The next 8 weeks or so will be an adventure for you all! This website is a great resource (and has an addictive quality ..LOL)
Lori, it sounds like a really fun day, although I would want a sleeping bad NOW, It's a real compliment for Adam to say, "She's a hunter." and to think she is tough enough to make it on the freezing ground. Have a good day.
Nancy
Betsy - that's too funny about the pictures! Hope you have a digital camera! When you write letters to him while he is in boot camp he'll love to get copies of them - it will remind him of normal day-to-day mundane stuff that they are oblivious too while they are there! I even wrote my daughter a letter from our dog, and sent a picture with the letter of the dog wearing a sign that says "STARVING - Will Work 4 Human Food". I have that picture posted on my N4M page if you friend me you can see it!
Sunny,

I will send the friend request. OMG, I bet that is hysterical. That's a great idea. Adam feeds our collies too, do you mind if I steal your idea? He would love it.

I'm also trying to think of some way to fudge a picture of the electronics in the house not working. Adam just fixed my laptop yesterday and he is always fixing anything that breaks. (My husband is living in Maryland due to a job relocation and I'm still in New Mexico trying to sell our house) Adam told me yesterday that when he's not here, I will have to go online to look up how to do these things, because that's what he has always done. I said that's a great plan, but what if it's my computer that's broken. LOL He just shook his head and laughed.

Betsy
