I thought it would be nice to start a discussion for our children leaving the week of October 25th 2010.  Welcome everyone.  Kathy

Elizabeth,
My son was the same way when he went into the army, it was all about his friends, it was hurtful and they don't understand that when they are gone for long periods of time, it is their family that is there for them. It will change for the better though, they do discover this over time.
Donna
Thank you Donna, you give me hope, Taylor's world revolves around his friends, I sometimes want to scream at him that your friends will come and go but I'm always right here, maybe deep down he knows that I'm always that soft place to land and that's why he's always on the run because he can always come home and I'm always there......Thank you so much for your words of support...Elizabeth
Elizabeth, I just sent you a friend request. Then we can message each other the boys last names.

And as a teacher, we see what we call "school behavior" and "home behavior." You know how when they were little and their friend's parents would say...Oh Johnny is SO polite, or the teacher would tell you how sweet he/she was, but that's not how they behaved at home? That's because they KNOW that you ARE always going to be there for them, and I think it is magnified when they are teenagers. But it does say something about how safe he feels with you. Now...THIS is the speech I give myself when Ian is being a total BRAT at home... But, it's really true! :-)
Nancy
Hi Donna, Maureen, Elizabeth and everyone with children leaving today or being dropped off to leave tomorrow. I am so tired this morning after last night. It was amazing. There was happiness with the swearing in and then waiting and waiting and waiting, then excitement, lots of laughter as our children finally reached their destination and new home for eight weeks. That laughter was probably for me 5 months of waiting and watching my son get ready for yesterday. I am just so proud of our depper family for making it this far and now seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I wish all of you the very best today and my thoughts and prayers go with you. Hugs. Kathy
I woke up this morning with an empty feeling inside but remembering the laughter from last night helped. I then turned on the television and saw chicago has tornado warnings today. I will not worry because I know the navy will take care of him. I am ok so far. Then my husband let me know the Sister, from the store Brandon bought his metal from, called yesterday and wanted to wish my son good luck and she would be praying for him. She new him from High School, one of the teachers to all of my sons. That made me cry. I guess there will be moments but I am going to write a long letter today and I know I will be fine. Hugs to everyone. Kathy
Kathy, I too felt empty this morning. All of the laughter helped so much last night but when I woke up at 5am this morning I couldn't help but think of him and wonder how his night was. I felt guilty for getting to sleep for 6 hours. I also heard of the tornado warnings and at first was nervous. But I know he is safe where he is and maybe will add some excitement into a otherwise miserable day. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone today! Hang in there, we can do this :) Susan
Ladies...we messed up a little. Unless you were on top of this and it's just ME lol. I was just telling Ian that Sara's Andrew would be at the hotel with him tonight and to look for him. Ian asked for his last name and I explained that we don't know any of our last names and he informed me (very patiently I might add...you know the tone of voice) "Mom, we don't go by our first names, we only go by our last names." OOPS!!

Another idea-we might be able to set up facebook pages (I already have one) where we can communicate. I have seen that some of the other moms here have them. We just need to set the privacy on high for security purposes.. I don't know if we are all comfortable with that idea though.

I have to be off...a week's vacation...YEAH!! I will not be on here tonight as we are meeting Ian at the hotel and taking him out to dinner and then we have an hours drive home. I can check in around 9ish (late cuz it's Pacific time) to see if phone calls for today's recruits came in and to see how last night's moms are dealing with everything.

GOOD LUCK to those of you whose kids are arriving at GL today!! Really, I need a chart to keep track of where we all are in terms of locations, kids, and times...:-) I am unfortunately need visuals.
Hugs,
Nancy
Nancy,

I wonder if we can set up a private thing on here, to discuss those things. FB is so easy to get into and I wouldn't want to jeopardize security for them. I did actually get a message from a friend whose husband is in the Army recently and she said to be really careful about FB and the military. I do have a Facebook page too, but I'm just not so sure that's secure enough?

Good luck to you and Ian tonight. I hope you have a wonderful time with Ian. Please make sure that we hear about your night tonight. We will miss you on here. ((hugs))

Betsy
Nancy, I think we should just make a group here that is private after PIR. Like Betsy, I don't really trust facebook enough. I believe you can personal message here and give each other email addresses and that would work too. Let's check and see if we can send an individual personal message today. Then we can find out our last names. For sure at PIR we will find out at the Meet and Greet. So much to think about. Hugs. Kathy
Susan, Last night, after waiting so long to get the "call", I was so happy to hear his voice I am not sure now what I heard. lol. I know he said he got there safely and I would be getting a box in about a week. I think he said afterwards I would be getting a phone call in 3 weeks. After that speech, he sounded like my son saying goodbye. I was just so happy to hear his voice. Also what threw me off was the box part. He was going to donate everything and didn't even take his cell phone so he wouldn't have to send back a box. Weird. I also could not get to sleep last night until 2:00. I read the HCC book and thought about what was happening to him at that moment. I heard "Letters to Boot Camp" is kind of humorous so I will read that today. Hugs, Kathy
Well I guess we can plan on 2-3 weeks. My phone will be glued to my side for the next 8 weeks. All day I have been thinking that no news is good news. I am glad he has made it through the first 24 hours without getting hurt. I wonder if anyone has ever gotten a call saying they are coming home this early on? Susan
Susan, I don't want to say anything to make us worry but this early it would probably be an undiagnosed problem like, eyes, ears, heart, etc. Also in the moment of truth they might be ineligible for some reason. But lets not think of any of those things. Good thoughts and prayers for their safety and that they are the lucky ones that don't get the Ricky Crud. I am so proud of those young people. Hugs, Kathy
