I know we are all overjoyed about our sailors coming home after PIR so let's get all of our questions answered here.

Ma'am,

Recruits graduating Dec. 17 & 22 will be granted leave and will be able to travel home.  Those graduating Dec. 17 will have their leave expire on Dec. 28.  Recruits graduating Dec. 22 will be granted leave that will expire Jan. 2.  Recruits are responsible for paying their own way from RTC to their home and then pay for their way from home to their next command for A School.  Once they are at their next command, they may request to be reimbursed for part of the travel costs.

Respectfully,

Recruit Training command

Traveling home the Sailors will be required to wear their uniforms because they have not phased in at A School.  A letter will be given letting them know what is allowed and not allowed while on Leave.  They cannot drive a car or consume alcoholic beverages while on Leave.

Our Sailors will not be allowed to bring their cars to A School.

This is a work in progress and I will try to answer questions as they become available to me.

Have a good day.  Kathy

Well, that is disappointing. :(

I don't know which is worse, them having to stay at BC over Christmas or not seeing them after A school. I guess the best plan for each of us is to just ask our SR which options that they want.

My son is going to Pensacola for A school, so I'm thinking that maybe a road trip may what I can do to see him there. I hope that he would at least have an afternoon or evening when he is there, that I could see him

Betsy
That is what we are def. planning to do. We have never been to Pensacola and I hear it is beautiful, so it is a perfect excuse to go visit him down there. I was beginning to do some research on his A-school situation and from what I read it seems like the third week in is when they will begin to get a lot more freedom/liberty on the weekends. They are very strict in the first couple of weeks. I read by the third week they can actually leave Friday night at 9:00 and stay out until Sunday evening sometime. That makes me really look forward to spending some "real" time with him.
I am trying not to think about them being stuck at GL over the holidays! I was already picturing him here for the holidays - - my son has a baby due the first week of February, so I am quite sure he will want to save his leave for then. Hopefully, he will just be finishing A-school up by the time she is born or at least right afterwards anyway. Personally, I think they should just let them come home for the holidays and give it to them as a gift! A Christmas present from the government - - after all their hard work in boot camp, they would surely deserve it! Something tells me that won't happen.
Hi Betsy and Stewfam, that is news I wish I didn't hear tonight. I did ask B what he would want to do if this exact situation arose and he said he wanted to come home for Christmas. I can just go FL and visit him before he finishes A school or just before he goes to where ever. I just got home from work. Need to eat then I think we are having chat room tonight. Hugs. K
Haha, I love it, "A Christmas present from the government" lol Wouldn't that be nice?

How nice that you are expecting a grandchild. Yeah, I can understand him definetely wanting to save his leave for that. That is so exciting. I have 2 grandchildren and they are awesome!

Betsy
stewfam - Pensacola is beautiful. Perfect beaches! Do plan a trip, you will love it! Susan
I was reading on the GL site that SR's awaiting release and Sailors waiting for A school are assigned to Ship 5 for berthing. There were a few pictures and a brief description of Ship 5. Bleak, much?

If you are going to PIR and your SR is not going to be taking leave for the holidays, get a 3-4 foot tree, pre-decorate it and take a few light weight decorations, take pictures of gifts for them, take a few gift cards, wrap them all in small packages and have Christmas morning on Saturday in your motel room. I wrapped a sewing machine for my daughter in a ring box one Christmas. My brother once got a TV in a box of matches. You can celebrate Hanukkah , Advent, and Kwanzaa each hour instead of each day. While my husband was active duty, I have celebrated holidays in motels all over the country. The important thing is not the place, or the exact date, or the surroundings, but the feelings, the memories, and the people.

Try to keep things light, interject humor. Your SR is bound to be feeling about as bummed as possible about the situation. A great gift for him would be infant booties and hat for his new addition. Then he can give them to the bambino in February to come home in. It is not like he has any time to get things for his baby. A baby shoe charm for his key ring might be nice. That way, he always has a talisman of his family with him. And of course, his wife could give him a small gold heart, because after all, she already has his doesn't she?

None of this costs much, but it is the kind of thing he'll remember forever.
Jewel,

Those are great ideas, how creative.

Betsy
I want D home for Christmas and we are planning to take a trip or two down to Pensacola. Plus we have family 5 hours from there in Jacksonville that will go see him. I can see that if your family is not close to A school that it could be a problem. I just think that after BC some family time would be nice. Susan
Susan,

Don't forget you are going to do that road trip with me. lol

Betsy
I won't forget! I'm excited! We can wear our pink scarves with our bathing suits on the beach :) Susan
You Nuts!
