I know we are all overjoyed about our sailors coming home after PIR so let's get all of our questions answered here.

Ma'am,

Recruits graduating Dec. 17 & 22 will be granted leave and will be able to travel home.  Those graduating Dec. 17 will have their leave expire on Dec. 28.  Recruits graduating Dec. 22 will be granted leave that will expire Jan. 2.  Recruits are responsible for paying their own way from RTC to their home and then pay for their way from home to their next command for A School.  Once they are at their next command, they may request to be reimbursed for part of the travel costs.

Respectfully,

Recruit Training command

Traveling home the Sailors will be required to wear their uniforms because they have not phased in at A School.  A letter will be given letting them know what is allowed and not allowed while on Leave.  They cannot drive a car or consume alcoholic beverages while on Leave.

Our Sailors will not be allowed to bring their cars to A School.

This is a work in progress and I will try to answer questions as they become available to me.

Have a good day.  Kathy

Thanks. I guess she is marching behind the flags...

She has know where and how long her school would be since she first sign up.

I am pretty sure she will want to come home for Christmas
Oh, she'll be there longer than the 15 weeks. They always are, the school rarely begins the day they check in; they have indoc and usually a hold period waiting for the class to form up. More opportunities to earn leave days, and hey, they're fed, housed and paid, so it is all good.
Question.... when they say leaves expires on Dec 28th. Does that mean they report for A school on the 28th or 29th. Just trying to book flight, and of course I want my girl home as long as I can keep her. BTW "Thanks" for all the legwork you guys have contributed! :)
I'm pretty sure they are to report on the 28th. I'm booking a flight for my son on the 27th.
tonya,

They have to report on the 28th. I got a flight for my son on the 26th, because he wanted a day to relax before starting A school.

Betsy
Smart idea; and it gives plenty of wiggle room in case of bad weather. Delayed flights are not an acceptable excuse for reporting in late. Rule of thumb for all sailors on leave, never book the later or last flights when returning from leave.
I tried to email the Public Affairs Office at this address rtc.pao@tnavy.mil
and it was returned. Anyone else use this address?
I was trying to get a confirmation that we have to book their flights to A School or my son is to do that through the Navy. Can you confirm?

My son said he wants to report on the 26th also. Good call i think so they can get settled!!!
;)

I've seen it posted elsewhere that they book their flights and put in a travel claim at A school in this situation. That's not official, but seems to be right.

Normally the Navy handles it, which is why there is confusion. I suggest a phone call to the POA on Monday for official confirmation.
Thanks, will do! ;)
Anti M,

I am making that call to PAO first thing tomorrow morning.

My husband wants to find out that if we fly him back to Great Lakes, after his leave, will the Navy then fly him to Pensacola? I explained to my husband that I'm not even sure that we can do that, because I would assume that if they were going to send him to A school, after PIR, it would probably be directly after he graduates. So, I have to find out if we can bring him home first and then, after his leave, will the Navy send him to his A school from Great Lakes? There are so many questions right now. Ugh!

The reason we need these answers is because we could book him on a flight for Southwest Airlines from home to Milwaukee or O'Hare. In the event that, for some reason, that he isn't able to come home at that time, or graduate on or time (or graduate at all for that matter) we will be able to use that flight as a credit later on. All of the other airline carriers charge at least $150 to change your flight. If you purchase travel insurance, there are restrictions on what reasons you are able to be reiumbursed (and you still have to pay the $150 change fee). One of the reasons, that I have been told that you may not get a refund, would be if your SR did not graduate from BC for a particular reason. Trust me, I've worked on this all day and talked to different travel insurance companies and airlines.

We had booked a flight for him, but we have now canceled it, until I get answers to those questions.

Betsy
Thanks for all the work you do getting information & keeping us informed! I have lots of questions concerning these same things.
Okay, I can go from what is normal. "Normal" is the Navy books the flight, then the sailor contacts the travel office to add the detour home and pays for the non-Navy portion. Given the short amount of time involved, I am betting this cannot happen. What I think must happen is book a flight from Great Lakes to home, then from home to the A school. These flights are paid for out of pocket. Once they check in at A school, they contact PSD and file a travel claim, and they would then be reimbursed for the Navy portion of the travel.

This is very unusual so I am in the dark. I just know how the Navy works in general, so I can make very good guesses. I just can't find the info anywhere for sure. I've been looking.

Flying home, then back to Glakes, then on to A school doesn't sound right at all.
