There seems to be so many of you lately!!! It is wonderful that you will have each other's support while going thru the process together.

Thought I would start this thread so you can at least connect and share stories together. Seems like there is a fair amount of you in Great Lakes and just as many more trying to decide if you can more to Great Lakes.

Yeah it is always a different story for everyone. I really just think it matters who is in charge and what are all the open orders!

Fitzfam - on the move up here I didn't go through the navy, I just did it myself but now we are doing a dity move (do it yourself) so if you have any questions I may be able to help. That's so exciting that your husband graduated. Did you have an amazing graduation weekend or what??

We are moving to Virginia Beach in less than 5 days from now and are so excited!!
My Husband Graduates 10/15 from BC and is going to be AECF. I'm pretty clueless on what the processes will be to move up there, anyone how what will happen after his PIR?
When your husband goes through INDOC, he'll be given briefs on what he has to do to become a Live Ashore. They're generally Phase 1 until they can go through the checklist to become Phase 2. You have to be Phase 2 to become a Live Ashore. He'll have to complete a Live Ashore packet- includes a copy of a dummy lease, your marriage certificate, and other items. From INDOC-which is generally on the USS Enterprise on base, he'll get moved over to a different ship(barracks) which could either be the USS Franklin, USS Tico, USS Cole (most popular for ETs), and others. The first school he goes through will be ATT, which takes about 2 months. Then he'll be on hold (clean all day) until he gets into his 'A' school. Depending on if is given the job of FC (fire controlman) or ET (electronics technician) in bootcamp, depends on how long his 'A' school will be. FCs have another stint of ATT after 'A' school, while ETs do not. Also, your husband will be assigned a duty section, and he'll have duty every 3 days where he won't be allowed to leave base. Just make sure he works hard at getting his Live Ashore packet done, as he won't be able to live at home with you until he completes it. Hope I helped! [:
This is wonderful information!!!! I am also trying to figure out how all this works. My husband graduates Nov 19th and the inital plan was for me to live here in Michigan until he finished A school but his last call home he said he needs me and the kids in Great Lakes with him! That made me very happy! I was wondering, will the navy come and pack us up and move us and if so, how do I find out the information I need to know about how to set things up with the movers? Thanks for all the info you have already given. It is greatly appreciated!!!
My husband just moved over to a school in GL on Tuesday
. He has been working really hard to complete his live ashore package: ) I'm so excited to find out when I can move to him.... hoping its soon!!!!!! For those of u who have moved to GL to be with ur husbands about how long after PIR was it When u moved up to GL????
Well first your hubby will have to become Phase 2 to become a Live Ashore (if he hasn't done that already). Then it takes them about 2-3 weeks to complete the rest of the packet. You can move up to Great Lakes any time, you'll just have to wait those 2-3 weeks for your husband to join you at night.
Hey, ladies. Just wanting to get your opinions.

My husband left for bootcamp last Thurs 10/28 and starts A school Jan 1st. He wants me to move up there ASAP. The only thing is I'm preggo with my first child, due Feb 24th. Should I move to GL right away & be with my husband OR should I wait until after I have my daughter? I haven't lived in Illinois since I was 9yrs old, and am really worried about having no family/friends there to help me out. Also, I've heard bad things about babies getting sick during the winter.

Thanks. I'm just concerned BC I wanna be with my husband, however I need help w/my baby from my family here in San Antonio.
That is a tough call but it comes down to...do you want your hubby to be part of the child's birth or your family? How does he feel about it?

Our daughter is eight months pg now with her first baby and had to make that decision too, her hubby is a soldier. I hate it (but support it) she is in upstate NY with her hubby now decorating that nursery!

When we had our first child, we were stationed in Japan...definitely not easy for family to be there so it was just my hubby and I but it was very special to us and I would never change that and seeing his face when our son was born.

It is a tough decision, good luck with your decision and welcome to the group!
Thank you, Mary. :)
My husband just left for BT last week and I am planning on moving out from CA right after (or maybe even right before) his graduation, since he starts A school right after. Do any of you know about on base vs off base housing? I wasn't sure if it would be difficult to arrange on base housing, what do you think?
hi I recently moved to great lakes from california also and me and my husband chose to live off base...in my opinion living off base is cheaper because you can save the left over money you get from his BAH, while if you live on base he won't get BAh....and also their might be a waitlist to move in and apartments are usually ready when you are...I hope this helps
I am moving as soon as I am done with Spring semester, we are going to live off base. Any areas to avoid or to especially look into? Are you freezing yet? lol I'm in Texas, still running around in flip flops starting to panic about how cold it is there! ANY advice would be FABULOUS!
