The purpose of this forum is designed to inform those parents of sailors who aspire to the rate of GM. It is intended to aide parents with what to expect once their sailor graduates boot camp (BC)..also known as PIR, and moves to the A-School side of the base. Questions will be answered by the family of sailors who are training to be GMs. If we don't have the answers, we will get them for you.

Please introduce yourself if your sailor is in the GM rate and provide background on your sailor so that we can get to know you. If you have specific questions about these ratings, and you ask them here, Will and Hoppi will be able to answer your questions. This will help all of us because the answers won't disappear pages down in the general forum.

I want to give Gary T. credit for this great idea; he just hired me as his secretary to put it together. So, jump in and we hope this will be helpful to all of you.

PS Toni, I need your daughter's name, please. Vee
Vee, glad to have you stop in. Sorry I haven't called in awhile. I have been baby sitting my grandson five days a week with an occasional Saturday night. Wouldn't have it any other way. I think its great our new sailors are moving more quickly. I think it may be because of the year end budget. Fewer Divisions graduating means less of a back log moving through the various schools. Too bad Mike and Nick had to wait so long. Oh well, it was for the best. Who would have thought they would both be on the same ship! I sure am glad we have new information coming in to the group. Keep it flowing ladies. It will help those who come behind you. Gary T.
To all GM mom's, my son Nicholas and Vee's grandson Michael were official notified today of there promotion to GM3 (E4). It surely is a happy time and may the rest of your sailors experience this wonderful event.
Congratulations to both of you. I know you are very proud. By the way, my youngest son, Josh, will be going to boot camp January 11, so will have two in the Navy!
Wow Mary, another P.I.R.. You will be an old pro when your second son graduates.
Good luck, Mary, to your son going to BC in January.
A big NE hello to all and Happy Thanksgiving!
My son is in BC in Ship 03, USS Hopper, Div 024 now and his PIR is 17 Dec and has chosen the GM Career Field. Reading all entries to this discussion has answered alot of my questions. Thanks to all and hope to talk to anyone w/ a kid in the same div & career field my son is in.

Laura (Lilmac)
Lilmac, best of luck to your son. Stay tuned for the P.I.R.. You will see what all of the parents have been talking about. Your son will enjoy being a GM. Tell him to apply himself in GM-A-School. Hopefully he will and he will get his choice of assignment. The GM rate currently has a lot of upward mobility with GM3 or E-4 being easily obtained in two years time. I am hoping my son will be able to pass the test for GM2 prior to the end of his first enlistment. Again best of luck to your son and your family.
Thanks for the info Gary! He's already talking about the advancement opportunities so, lets keep hope he is able to stay on course w/ those goals

Looking forward to more info. And will ask if I have any questions.

L
Lilmac, always glad to help. If you really want to surprise your sailor check out the NAVY TIMES. Look for projects and petty officer quotas. They list the number of sailors taking the petty officer tests for E-4, 5, and 6 in all rates. It shows the number testing, passing and those promoted in each rate. Always feel free to ask a question, if anyone can help they will.
Hi Laura, Congratulations to your son on his upcoming PIR. Gosh it doesn't seem almost 2 years since Michael graduated from B.C. Could you send me your son's name for our list of GM families on here? Thanks so much. I hope you find someone in the same division and career field with your son. Welcome to our GM group by the way. Hugs, Vee
Hello everyone!
My bf left for bootcamp 11/3. his PIR is 1/7 and he will be staying in GL for A school to be a GM. He said he might be a grad and go. Will he get to leave base after he "moves"? How long is school? Is there usually a hold? Does he need additional schooling after A school? where will he most likely be stationed? how much of his 4 years is he likely to be deployed? Is there somewhere on here that already has all this info?!?

thanks for the help!
