Welcome, My son, Jarred, has been with the USS Sampon since it was dedicated in Nov 2007. It is a really great ship, we have toured it. My son is a CS3, Culinary Specialist (cook). There will be times when you can't get ahold of him, when they are out to sea, but know that if there is anything wrong they will contact you. There have been a couple times when internet has been down on the ship while they were out, which can be frustrating because it is the only way to keep in contact, but they told us about it and about how long it would last. They do have a phone on board, so when there is time, he can use it too (when it is working or if there is time for it). We live in Wisconsin, so it is hard for him to be stationed in San Diego, but this is where his life is taking him.

Again, welcome, and ask questions anytime.

Proud Mom of Jarred
Thanks for the info Angela, I look forward to talking again soon.

Welcome Roxan. My son Jeff is also on the USS Sampson and has had one deployment. Most of the time while they were gone we were able to communicate by e-mail. As Angela said there are times when the internet is down but they do try very hard to get it back up and going. They also are able to call when they are in ports. They all seem to find the phones to call home. There is also an ombudsman for the ship who is a go between for sailors and families. She usually sends out announcements and tries to keep us all up to date on what is happening with the Sampson. Her name is Jessica Murray and here is her e-mail address. ombudsman4102@hotmail.com. I find when I have a question and need an answer she is the best person to contact. We are in Montana so depend on the communication from the Ombudsman. There is also a news letter that she tries to get out when they are deployed at least once a month but otherwise I think when she has enough news to share or when time permits. Not sure about that part when they are home. I believe he will enjoy his time on the Sampson, I know that Jeff loves being there.

Lynn
Thanks Lynn! :) Glad to hear someone likes my newsletters. :)

Hi Roxan! I'm Jessica, the Ombudsman. Please email me your information so I can add you to my email list. Fair warning, I do send out San Diego related things sometimes, but as Lynn said, I try to get my newsletters out every month or so.

Please know that even if the email and phone lines are down on the ship, I will always have a way to contact the ship if there is ever an emergency, as will the American Red Cross. So, if there is ever an emergency, you can call me and I will be able to get a message to your sailor, or help you contact the American Red Cross, depending the severity of the issue. (My phone number will be attached to all of my outgoing emails.)

Also, I will never say exact dates for ship movements, but your son is joining us when we are working on a transition between being a "deployment ready ship" and a maintenance phase. There will be a few very short work-ups for the ship before Christmas so that the ship can get the last of it's qualifications, and then they will be put into the ship yard for a few months. We do not expect any long deployments until next fall.

Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

PS - MOMs... Watch for an official Sampson Facebook page coming soon! I will email the information to you when it is available. :)
Thanks for the info Lynn, look forward to hearing from you again soon.
