There seems to be so many of you lately!!! It is wonderful that you will have each other's support while going thru the process together.

Thought I would start this thread so you can at least connect and share stories together. Seems like there is a fair amount of you in Great Lakes and just as many more trying to decide if you can more to Great Lakes.

Congrats on those orders! They have a few different classes at Dahlgren so it just depends on when the classes are starting.
So does that mean he doesn't get paid during that break??
He will always be paid :-) during holds, stand downs and leave.
Good thing! :) Hubby assured me of this as well. Being a stay-at-home mom is starting to look more appealing every day!
Well I would contact those apartments and see if they can email you some pics that way you aren't completely in the dark about it.How far are you guys willing to commute to the base? There are bigger more built up areas outside in Fredericksburg VA which is about 40mins away and and over the bridge in MD.
That's a great suggestion Anne, every apartment should be able to email photos now. I'm trying to remember but didn't you get some wicked weather last year? That might be something to keep in mind when house hunting in that area but heck I live in the south now and the slightest thought of snow makes me park my car for days!!
HAHA.Yeah the weather was pretty crazy there right after we moved. It figures I had been hoping for warm weather and there was a snow storm.
Does anyone know of any furnished apartments in GL? We're trying to figure out what to do with our stuff and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with renting a furnished apartment. Haven't seen any posts to that effect so I apologize if I'm repeating a line of questioning.
PNW -
I don't recall there being any posts about furnished apartments in GL. We rented a furnished apartment when we moved to Atlanta for 30 days while waiting for our household goods and it was a gouging! Not sure if it was because it was a short term lease or the fact that it was furnished but it was expensive.

Why aren't you letting the Navy move you to GL?
I suppose we could, but I'd like to move back to VA while he's in BC. Otherwise, I'll be stranded in TN (working from home) with my our two obnoxious dogs and NO support system. I'm a strong woman, but I'd rather be with my parents if I have the option... also saving on rent is looking rather attractive.

We were thinking about putting our stuff in storage for the two months he's at BC and then having the Navy move us up once he gets his A school date. It'll already be packed into boxes but I don't assume that would be an issue for the movers! They wouldn't unpack it all, would they?!

Also, don't I have to wait until his Live Abroad is approved and he's been to that briefing before we can actually move our stuff?
According to the smart web move website, anything that is packed in boxes in storage must be unpacked. I'm guessing it's an issue with them being responsible for what they've packed. All of our stuff is in storage in Great Lakes right now and my girls and I are in Charleston. We're going to ask if we can sign a waiver saying that we wont hold them liable for anything that we've already packed, but if not then my husband is going to have to move the stuff to VA.
We had a few things in boxes both times we have moved now. They just opened them and peeked inside, then packed those boxes in other boxes,it was kinda weird. But yeah if you have a ton of stuff already packed a waiver would be a good way to go if the company offers that.
