How long is this training and what will he be doing? I have been trying to find out.

I responded on the other page, but am happy to contribute anything I know, think I know, or wonder about to this discussion too! I think the training is around 11 weeks long. Seems like it used to be 8, and I've also heard about 14 too, but it seems like it's around 11 weeks of actual classes. But it generally takes longer due to delays for starting. they have plenty of "hold" time, there will be holiday schedules these next few months which will set things back a day or two at a time, then they have BECC classes, that's what most of them are, they're modules & we've only finished the first one so I can't say much about them. After that's all done, then they have actual MM classes too, for 9 days I think. Like I said, we're just beginning this journey so I am learning as we go & Terri has been a wealth of information for me. I hope your son likes to study, there will be LOTS of it. Once he gets to phase 2 it will get a little bit better, a little bit more freedom. Good luck to you & your son!
Jane,MMMom-Thanks for the information. I wish I knew when he would start. I am taking his clothes and his phone so I may have to place them in Lock n Go. That way he can go get them when he can and it may be cheaper than mailing them.
My son will be staying in GL for MM school too. Ship 03 Div 024. Will be graduating on December 17. From what I can get from his phone call to me on Saturday, he plans to go to A School, then take 5 days off between Christmas and New Years for a visit to us....Didn't want to go into the hole (although given the option) and thought it would be best.
My Son just graduated Friday and will be in A school for Machinist Mate in GL starting the 8th!! Is there a graduation for A school?

How's everyone else's MM?  You guys are all behind my son so if you have any questions I can help with, let me know. My son just finished mod 6 of BECC, which is sort of the introductory stuff.  He only has mod 7 left to finish & then after Christmas he will do the MM strand & then ship off to the fleet.  His classes have been very hard, he actually had to repeat mod 1 because he failed the test for it twice- by 1 question!  we've discovered that repeating a test or the entire mod is not as unusual as it seemed, so don't worry if it happens.  Mods 3 & 4 were the most fun, lots of labs & hands on damage control training.  Mod 6 is the hardest because it is the shortest at only 3 days & has lots of information.  If you're struggling, they have "mando" which is mandatory time in the evenings. A teacher can require it or a sailor can choose to go if he needs to get caught up. It isn't really extra help, just extra time on the computer.  If you fail a test the first time, you get 2 hours of "remediation" which is actual study time with a teacher for whoever failed the test. This is very helpful & you get to retake the test.  Both times my son failed the first time, there were sailors who had failed 3 or 4 times & were repeating again. Not a good choice, most were doing it because they wanted out of school. If you fail out of school, you go to the fleet as undesignated. Undes isn't the best choice, but it isn't as bad as it sounds either & can be a good option for some because you get to do lots of different things & see all the jobs, then choose something at the end of 2 years.

So that's where we're at in our navy journey!  if anyone has any questions or problems,  please let me know- and good luck to your sailors!

just opened a letter from my son. he just recently found out that he will be staying in Great Lakes for his A school for MM for 11 weeks?? we were told he was going to either be in Connecticut or San Diego, by his recruiter. is it common for recruits to NOT get time off in between bootcamp and A school?? we will be flying in to GL from Maui, Hawaii for graduation in August 2011 and wishing and praying he could have sometime with us.
