My son Nick will begin OCS on January 30, 2011.  Does anyone else have a LO beginning OCS on that date?

Judy, I think its best to give them a phone card. As far as I can tell, they can't have their cell phones and a phone card will allow them to make the few calls they can place while OCS. I am also thinking that maybe its best to have her laptop and cell phone and other things in a box that can be mailed to OCS at the time they can use them.

I worry about Rachel driving on ice and snow as well. When Rachel took her Oath, she was told by a recent OCS graduate that he wished he had a second pair of running shoes since his only pair got wet early on and never seemed to have a chance to dry out since they were on his feet everyday. Apparently they can bring two pair, but I would check. One list said they should use cross trainers, while another list said running shoes. I bought Rachel a good pair of white leather cross trainers this weekend, but despite that she found them very comfortable, her toes went numb while she was running. I found out that the average cross trainers don't have enough padding under the ball of the foot to keep this from happening when you run on concrete. There is a pair made by New Balance that is supposed to fix this problem, so Rachel is stopping into her local store and trying them on. The problem with running shoes is that they are not completely made of leather and with the pounding they are going to take at OCS, the netting and other materials will not hold up, much less keep their feet warm and dry. It gets really cold in Newport. I want Rachel to have every advantage so that she can complete OCS on schedule. I don't want her to be undermined by the wrong or ill fitting shoes.
Nick has definitely decided not to take his car. He has a small, two-seater sports car with rear-wheel drive, and having lived in Ohio, I know his car won't do well in the snow (we now live in almost snow-free South Carolina). Violet, you had asked me earlier if anyone took Nick's photo while he was being sworn in, and, unfortuntely no one did. :-) (Sorry I'm just now replying; we were away for a 4-day cruise of the Bahamas.) Tina
Wow, the Bahamas! Its instant winter here in PA. Low thirties every night. Almost fifty during the day. We had snow about an hour west of here last weekend. I will have to tell Rachel that Nick is not taking a car. It might make her not feel pressured to have one. I hope.

Tina, I have been looking FB for the 1/30/2011 OCS class and so has Rachel. Have you found it yet. Rachel would like to be in touch with the others. - Violet If Nick would like I can ask her if she would mind if I posted her email address.
I have not seen the 1/30/2011 OCS class on FB. I'll ask Nick if he'd like to correspond with Rachel since she'll be in his class.
Judy are you aware of any Facebook group for 1/30/2011 OCS class? I know that Rachel has been looking for it. Also as I mentioned to Tina, if Jesse would like to get in touch with her, I can ask if she would mind if I posted her email.
Not to butt in, but what does Rachel think she will need a car for, other than storage? The first 8 or 9 weeks she won't be allowed to go anywhere without a Candio escort, and the last 3 or 4 weeks she would need permission to leave the base for any reason. There is very little personal freedom during the 12 weeks.......
I agree with you. We just let the issue die the slow death of silence, which is always best. Rachel has not brought it up since. If we would have argued about it, that would have been all the more reason to get one. LOL! Yup, it would have been for storage, or "rite of passage" or whatever. She will eventually get one, when the time is right. Until then, Mums the word. Thanks for thinking of us.
I still can't think of what they store in their cars in the dead of winter. It can't be electronics or anything else that will freeze.
My son was in class 21-10 that graduated Sept 30th. He took his car (12 hr drive) and he stored his laptop, extra stuff and some of the other guys also stored their 'extra stuff' in his car until the end. He was unable to use his car until the last few days of OCS. Their civilian clothes that they arrive in and cell phones etc are locked up. My sons's class got their cell phones at the Candio phase - week 9. Good idea to send phone cards - I mailed some after a few weeks - they use the base phones for the first few calls (1-2) and 1 email - then you will not hear anything for a few weeks. After the first 3 weeks he got his stationary and addresses so he could write. Just remember 'no news is good news' . They all look forward to letters from home - relatives etc.- I wrote a few times a week with just what was new, going on with family etc. He said he really appreciated all the letters - he kept all of them in a box . They are kept busy so they don't have a lot of free time. When he left Newport - had SWO training for 3wks after OCS - he had 2 very filled sea bags, uniforms in suit bag, paperwork - it filled his car returning to. His friend that flew home to North Carolina - had to pack it all and the airline accepted it. I hope all of this has answered your questions - I found a lot out about OCS once he was there from this site and the OCS graduate site. Lots of good information from veteran N4M's.
Violet, I ma not aware of a FB page for the 1-30 class. Jesse might be but I am not home - I am in Texas until Sunday. I will ask Jesse if he would like to get in touch with Rachel. Thanks for the running shoe discussion below. I will make sure Jesse has two pairs of shoes. Thanks.
My son will begin OCS on January 30, 2011 with your son Nick. They will be class 09-11. He wants to be a pilot. First military experience for our family.

Hi Pam - Sorry I'm just now responding. I saw you left your message on 12-7, but somehow I missed it.  My apologies!  Where do you live?  How long has Ryan been interested in being a Navy officer?
