There seems to be so many of you lately!!! It is wonderful that you will have each other's support while going thru the process together.

Thought I would start this thread so you can at least connect and share stories together. Seems like there is a fair amount of you in Great Lakes and just as many more trying to decide if you can more to Great Lakes.

Yeah, it's not just a few boxes. An entire house of stuff in storage. If it didnt fit in my trunk, it didnt come back with us.

We have been told several times by different people that unless his school is over like 21 weeks (I think) that they won't move the "dependents" which is why I'm not waiting for the Navy to move me, the wait to get it done can really add weeks and I'd rather be near my hubby!  Our friends when they got to their first base had to wait 9 weeks to get their items.  I'm not impatient, just rather do it myself and be done with it.  I don't want hubby to have to deal with anymore than he has to fresh out of BC, this way all he has to do is change home of address and put in for live ashore.  = )

Thanks for the advice. I'm starting to realize I didn't think this whole thing through cause we have two dogs and I highly doubt anyone would be willing to rent us a furnished apartment with them! :)
Renting furniture is awful.. it's super expensive when you really think about it. We got our furniture on craigslist.. we paid like.. 200 for a whole living room set.

I came across a few, however they are outrageous, like it would be cheaper to buy all new furniture outrageous. I am looking for a place as well but won't be moving till May...

alright so Ill be moving to great lakes does anyone know where some good off base housing is and what are some good towns/ cities to be living in I was looking online but I'm not sure how the cities are...as in if they are good and safe or i should be worried If anyone could give me some input that would be great =) thank you
hello,
I did so much research before moving here with my 3 kids. I chose to be a little further from base like 10 miles. I live in the lake side of sheridan rd in Zion. Very safe nice friendly. Still close. Waukegan and north chicago are places to stay away from but beach park, zion, and winthrop harbor are very nice I live very close to the harbor and I love it here. There are alot of places on my street for rent I could give you some numbers.. There is also a small apartment in my house for rent. Good luck.

this was helpful! thank you!!

another question that I have is how does duty work when you live off base. my fiancee isn't quite sure about it
It really depends on the ship, but with my husband's ship, he has to go to the ship at 7 am and can't leave base till 7 am the next day.. and he does this every four days.
do you know how this works if he is still in A school?

that is in A-school.. they call the barracks ships, that's what i meant.. They still have a room in the barracks even if they live out in town.. and in my husband's barracks, they have 24hr duty days every four days.
