This is a little ways off (my son grads power school April 22), but what determines whether an MM will be sent to New York or stay in Charleston, if anything...and also, how long have ya'll experienced 'grad hold' after power school? My son is single...heard that may be a determining factor...

I don't have any actual experience with this yet, but my son told me that they request which location they prefer, but ultimately it's up to the Navy where they send them.   I don't know if there are other factors added in, like being single.

My son graduated Power School Sept 3, 2010. He had to report to NY  Friday Sept 17 and start Prototype Monday Sept 20. He is an EM and NY had 20 some spaces ready to fill and he raised his hand. He is single and one of his married friends (no children) who didn't want to go, did. (He and wife are happy they are there now.) A group of MM's also went to NY but didn't start until several weeks or months later. It all depends on classes already there and if they are graduating/moving through the program on schedule or not. I've read where some MM's were on 'hold' and didn't start in Goose Creek for almost 6 months I've also read where some were on hold longer. If a plant is down for whatever reason it will clog up the 'pipline' and there will be holds. Where they go depends on space available, volunteers, needs of Navy (not necessarily in this order). This is from reading and info from son. As always things change but this seems to be the most current info I have gleaned. Hope this is of some help.
Thank you guys! I also have read info over the past year or so, awaiting this time, but haven't been keeping up with N4Ms or anything else lately! Went back previous few months for posts pertaining to the above, but didn't find any. We're hoping he stays in GC, but we'll see!

Single can have a factor, but it also depends on how many volunteers they have to go to New York. And sometimes it can be as simple as the luck of the draw!

The most recent I've heard: All the reactors in New York were down, so they were even moving some guys back to start in Goose Creek, instead.

This changes all the time. However, what doesn't seem to change is the hold time for MMs. I've been hearing that EM's are having extremely minimum Grad Hold times... Like less than 2 weeks from the time they graduate Power School. I haven't heard much at ET's... But with the MM's I've consistently seen (and heard) long Grad Holds. For some guys, they're sending them out to the fleet to get qualified, and then bringing them back to do prototype when they are openings.

It really does change depending on which reactors are up and which are down...

Heard the same about the reactors in NY! Though I also heard once everything is taken care of up there, they're going to start sending people like crazy since there's no wait time.

My MM Son is single, just graduated from Power in Class 1005 on December 17th.  He wants New York but

currently they took all the EM's and ET's from his class,  all were "grad and go" to prototype in both locations.  They were told that they need EM's and ET's more in the fleet right now so the MM's are on grad hold.  Currently 8 weeks but could be up to 24 weeks according to the Master Chief at Goose Creek.  It is the luck of the draw based on availability of location when they are picked for a class.  There are still MM's from the last class that have not gotten Prototype yet.

I would be shocked to learn they were letting guys who have not yet passed through  prototype out to the fleet to get qualified.  They have not yet demonstrated they are capable to operate a nuclear reactor.  That does not sound like it could be right.  My understanding is that the guys on hold remain at Goose Creek until a class opens.  By the way prototype is also where nukes receive their submarine safety safety training.  I do not see how naval reactors would send a guy fresh out of nuclear power school to a submarine that would be unconscionable.

That information came from my sailor and other wives/girlfriends. They're just being sent out to get qualified... like with the Dolphins and such. Then they're brought back to be trained on the prototypes for the actual Nuclear Reactors.

Prototype or not... The guys straight outta Power School probably know double than the rest of the guys on the boat/ship...

Thanks for the update well that makes more sense, so they are getting quals on the non-nuclear aspects of the boat before going to prototype.   That makes a lot more sense now.
It seems as though Ballston Spa vs. Goose Creek is random.  My son is single and is in GC for Prototype right now.  His "grad hold" after power school was about 5 months, but was undetermined right up until the week before it started.
My son is in the same power school as your son and also a MM.  Over Christmas he told me they were informed they would be on atleast a 4 month hold and it was STRONGLY recommended they take some online college courses to work toward completing their degrees.
Thank you My3sons! I wonder if they know each other? My son didn't inform me of the college info, probably because he doesn't want me nagging him to death! I'd love for him to work towards his degree. He did tell me they'd have a long hold before prototype. Either way, I think he/ll be fine with it. He's settled into the navy life, being told what to do, when to do it and where to do it! LOL
