We had planned on using the hotel shuttle to go to and from the PIR but I was wondering if we then would have to drive back to base to pick up our SR or will some SRs be able to go on the shuttles with their families?  On the RTC website under Rules for Liberty it says on No. 5: "Families may not enter the base after graduation and will need to meet graduating Sailors for liberty at the main RTC gate". If we need to go back to get the car and then go pick him up that is not a problem; I just want to be sure of what we need to do on the day of PIR before that day gets here. Does anyone have an answer to this?

Sailors ride on the shuttle with you!  Go on the shuttle!  It's the best!  Espcially in this cold weather.  Sailors are supposed to ride for free...not sure if just yours or all of them...normally it is $3/pp.
Thanks for the info.
I do not think this is so for the Grad and Go to the AECF school at Great Lakes.  If they are granted liberty after they get all their gear  stowed and "check in" they call you to come get them. This takes hours for the sailor to accomplish. That is when you need a car.  I rented a car because that is what I understand.
To add to my above comment. I will take the shuttle to the PIR from the Ramada and I will take the shuttle back to the Ramada but without my sailor.

We just came back from our son's PIR he graduated on 1/14. We stayed at the Ramada and planned on taking the shuttle, but ended up driving instead. It is much easier to have your own car as you can take your Sailor right away with you and not have to worry about catching the shuttle back. Also If you take the shuttle, its still a 15 to 20 minute walk once you get there because they are not permitted to drive you in as far as you can in your own car. However, if you drive, I would leave no later than 6:30, earlier is better to get there in plenty of time to find a good seat. The traffic is bumper to bumper going into the base, so make sure to give yourself a good amount of time. Even though the Ramada is only 4 miles away, it took us an hour to get there because of graduation traffic. Unfortunately, one of the Ramada shuttles broke down last week and so the families that were on that shuttle ended up getting there after ceremonies had already started and had a hard time finding a seat.

When you drop your sailor off, you can pull into the the base  right at the first entrance their is the Navy Exchange store where you can park and go in and shop, that is what we did when we dropped him back off after liberty.

I hope that all helps. I know it sounds stressful, but really, as long as you leave early enough, you will be fine. Enjoy the graduation, it is so amazing to see these Sailors graduate! ;)

Thank you for the info; tennismom3.
Wow, I don't know which is better, now...
Sitting all by myself in a car in a traffic jam does not sound fun.  I like to walk so having to walk a little bit further if I take the shuttle sounds OK.  I will take the shuttle.
