Carolyn (graduating June 25) heard from someone that if you have a Navy veteran relative coming, that person can pin on their rank (not sure if that's the right term). She asked me to check on this site...we have found it the most accurate and informative place to go! Anybody know if that's true?

If you are talking about a pinning at boot camp - I don't think there are any - (didn't notice if the honor grads got "pinned". They may be talking about A school graduation.
My son's wife got to pin his wings on at his FRAC graduation.
What is FRAC?
Really?? WOW how did this happen??
Oh sorry, I forget that newbies don't know all the acronyms (all bazillion of them!) FRAC means Fleet Replacement Air Crew. My son is a Rescue Swimmer so was trained as an air crewman as well.
Hey all, pinning is referring to the different qualifications you have earned. These are in addition to your job (rate) and not so much your rank (Petty officer for example)   For example when you qualify for all "jobs" (rates) on a ship or boat (submarine).  None of the kids will be qualified when they graduate from Boot. Some of the honor recruits will (at least when I graduated) be mentioned but they will not be qualified in anything specific.  As the lady said with the FRAC this young man completed all qualifications relating to Fleet Replacement Air Crew. (My son is a Rescue Swimmer so was trained as an air crewman as well.)  When they do this they wear an emblem on their uniform in addition to their ribbons.  Generally speaking it takes several months to earn this qual.  I think what Caroline's mom is asking is if the boots invited guests can wear their former rank and rate.  For example: I was a CTM2 so I wonder if I can I wear my crow on my civilian clothes?  That would really be an awesome privilige. (Sorry not the best speller here.)
