Apartments in Ballston Spa

My MM Nuke just got detachment orders from Goose Creek for March 5th. He has been told he will be on hold for 8 weeks once in NY.  We are looking for any recommendations on apartments/housing close to school.  Any area to stay away from? of course looking for economical, possibly a studio situation. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey!

I would recommend trying to find a place either in Ballston Spa or Saratoga Springs.  There are a lot of listings for places like Clifton Park, Mechanicsburg, etc. - and they don't look all that far, to be honest - but once you get here you realize that it's way further than it seemed.  Ballston Spa is a nice little town with plenty of charm, and Saratoga Springs is close to all the restaurants and shopping places you could need.

We live in base housing, and we like it a lot for everything we get and the location (we got a deal during a promotion, so they take $250 less than BAH).  There are plenty of apartments in the area, if you'd like to and have time to look around for one.  Try looking on AHRN.com for apartment listings, and there's also this website that helped me out with getting an idea of prices and costs of living/utilities in the area:  www.saratogarenter.com

Best of luck to you in finding a place!  A little piece of advice from living here:  You will thank yourself forever for having a garage if you'll be here during winter months at all, and make sure whatever place you choose has a military clause just in case.

I did not think they had base housing in Ballston Spa.  I will check into all of the sites you suggested above. Thanks so very much for you good advice.

My son shared a house in Middle Grove, NY. I've also heard there are nice places in Saratoga Springs. The latter seems to be the main area for shopping and entertainment.

My son & his roommate are in the Gaslight Apartments in Saratoga Springs, they seem to like them.  My son said almost all the residents are old women so the guys like the quiteness & they are able to sleep during the day when working nights.

Although I think my son wishes he had rented something alone - hes the Felix & his roommate is the Oscar :)   they went through Saratoga Reality.

My son is sharing an apartment with a roommate in Quite Harbor, Saratoga Springs, only 10 minutes from the base. Price includes utilities y no deposit is required. I stayed with them during the holidays and it is very quite and comfortable: 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, washer and dryer. Only nukes live in the area.

This is where we live, too.  It's really nice, and a great deal for all you get.  And it's a great location, especially for us wives - it's a little further from the site than some places people live, but it's perfect compromise distance between shops and restaurants and walmart and the commissary and all that, as well as the site for them to get to work.  I'm really glad we went with base housing here.

Yes, I think you're referring to Quiet Harbor. It's "base" housing, though it's owned independently but rented to only Navy personnel and its still a 15 minute drive to the reactors. I've heard nothing but good reviews though! That's where we're moving to at the end of the month.

hi, when I was visiting my son in NY last week we drove by all the base housing, they were all really nice.  my son said when they were leaving GC and (they only give them a short time to find somewhere to live) they were not told the base housing was for single guys too - he said if he had it to do over he would diffintely rent/live there.

My son will be renting one of the houses in Quiet Harbor with another sailor. You've made me feel pretty confident that it's going to be a great place for him. I'll be going up there in June. Can't wait! :)

I found this information below in my files. I can't remember the name of the mom who posted this several years ago in the Nuke Moms group. I think it's worth repeating.  BunkerQB

I was just reading up on the comments and I have a good move-in story at Prototype School in NY. My son and 2 other mates rented a house in Saratoga Springs from Jeffrey E. Brown Realty over the internet with a jacuzzi, pool table, ping pong table, darts, washer/dryer, 4 bedrooms, completely furnished, etc for $1600.00/month $2500.00 security deposit. Their lease also had a required maid service agreement ($80.00 cash left on the dining room table once a month as it turned out). The lease was from October 28-April 27, 2006. One of the guys arrived at the house the day after the lease was in effect, only to find that the owner of the house was still living there. All of the guys had a 2 week leave so they would be arriving at different times. He only wanted to unpack his belongings, leave his car, and head home for his 2 week leave. He ended up leaving his car and belongings at the airport. My son was coming home first so he called me to let me know what was going on (this is definitely a "I need my mom to fix it situation"). I called the realtor and he was mad because they didn't call first. I pointed out the fact that they had a signed lease and they didn't have to call, they technically owned the house for 6 months and although they didn't have a key they could have found a way to get in even if that meant breaking a window and replacing it at their expense. The owner of the house was also using the utilities at the lessors expense. Anyway, they eventually moved in to their 4 bedroom furnished home with the jacuzzi that none of them had time to use so they drained it, the pool table with no cue tips for the sticks, 2 extra refridgerators running in the basement that they unplugged to save on electricity and heating bill that ran up another $300.00-$600.00 per month on average for a typical NY Winter, in that house anyway. The kitchen refridgerator had duct tape holding the interior shelves on the door together, the stove was filthy and the electric burners didn't fit the cooking surface. In the end my son had to call about getting the security deposit back and the owner said that there were a few items that had to be replaced. She sent him a receipt to replace one of the refridgerators in the basement because the hotdog and hamburg buns that "SHE" had left in the freezer got moldy ($600.00). The refridgerator was at least 20 years old. She also charged $300.00 or more for the jacuzzi because she claimed that it had to be repaired because it was drained. I called the repair person and what had to be done was normal wear and tear. All of the receipts were on the same store bought forms. The new refridgerator was bought at a yard sale on a Wednesday.

I think they learned a lesson about rental property. There was a woman at the Naval Base who tried to help, but the owner wouldn't budge and the sailors would have had to take her to small claims court.
