My son is at basic right and will be getting to Goose Creek in early March. I was hoping to find out what he can have in his room while there. He has own LCD TV and he was hoping they were allowed in the rooms. We live in Atlanta so are planning to bring anything he needs as soon as we can. We are very luck to have only a 5 hour drive to be there. If anyone knows what can brought into the rooms I would be very grateful for that information...  Thanks in advance.

My husband and I are living in Goose Creek right now and he lived in the BEQs before I moved here. I asked him about this and he said it depends on how big the TV is.  He'll have to fit it in a 'wardrobe/entertainment center' type thing but my husband cannot remember exactly how big it is. He can have a playstation, Xbox, laptop, cell phone etc but it must fit in the cabinet and all personal possessions have to be kept locked up during the day.  He will need an alarm clock once he gets here.  He won't be able to wear his clothing "Civvies" until week four or Phase II of school (not including the indoc period) but he will be responsible for his own laundry.  He'll be able to eat in the galley for all meals but my husband bought snacks when he got here.  They all just walked down to the NEX and bought their supplies.  Basically, he can have anything in his BEQ (besides weapons, alcohol, lava lamps or any illegal material) as long as it fits in his cabinet and can be locked up. We've been here for a few months so if he needs anything or if you have any other questions just let me know!
Thank you very much for the information. He does have all the stuff you mentioned. I guess he may have trade his TV and decide on what he wants most.
My son got to GC around the middle of December.  When he first went he only took what he'd had in GL, but when he went back after Christmas his car was packed full.  He didn't take a TV, only his laptop and Ipods, but he took lots more clothes than I thought he'd want to take.  He also got 5 or 6 of those plastic storage drawers from Target, he said they've really helped him organize his stuff.
Bar>KWife... thanks for the information. My son prepacked his stuff for A school, and I really think he might have too much. But since we are driving it to him (from Texas), we will bring anything back that he can't have.  He just started, his PIR is 4/01/11 so we won't be taking anything to him until much later. I think I will start looking for the stackable drawers for his extra clothes! That's a great idea. I will plan to take him some snack foods as well. Do you know if he will need a laundry bag or is that provided? I am trying to be proactive and get somethings together so I can ship it off as soon as he says he can get stuff!
Bar>KWife, my son did not take his laundry bag when he originally went to Charleston, but the first care package I sent him, I had some extra room in my box and asked if there was anything he specifically needed.  He said if I could fit his mesh laundry bag in, it would be great, so I managed to get that sent to him too.
That's great that he packed everything already!  We're from Texas (Bryan/College Station area) and it is quite the drive but I'm guessing you won't be in a UHaul with two dogs while you're 6 1/2 months pregnant! That was our drive over here...not fun!  He will be happy to see yall though, once he starts school they'll keep him really busy!

The B/CS area is my favorite part of Texas.  Are you or your husband Aggies?  My son's class of 08, and once he started going down there, I embraced Aggie-ism!

My husband graduated from there, class of '09.  I went there for a semester and then he said "Navy" so I quit until we get to our next station.  We definitely miss that area because we both grew up there. Charleston doesn't look too different from East Texas. Actually, the whole drive up here looked like East Texas. But, the people aren't as nice here, I will say that!  We're driving home this summer and we have our list of places to eat while we're home. We want real Mexican food! :)
Well then Howdy!! Was your husband in the Corps of Cadets?  My son was in N-1, if that means anything to you.  I bet you are missing Mexican food.  I've never been to Charleston, I'm going for Easter, so I can't wait to see that part of the country.  My sailor's coming home after he finishes A school on April 1 to go down to CS for Chilifest.

He wasn't in the Corps while he was there but I always loved walking to class and hearing the spurs on the sidewalks. They have Mexican food here but it is Authentic--no spice or fake cheese.  Downtown Charleston is really neat. When everyone makes their trips up here I would suggest going to: The Angel Oak, Folly Beach and Market Street.  I'd say those are some of the "must sees" around here. If your sailor wants to take you to Patriots Point it is pretty neat too but I've never been inside. If they wear their uniforms they get in for free (great photo op too with the guys in their uniforms).  The Cypress Gardens are right down the road from base. I haven't been there yet but we'll be going next week when my mom comes into town. Random info!

Oh Chilifest, my husband went a few times. That'll be a great way to unwind from school :)

Okay. My son is officially a SAILOR now, and will leave for Charleston next Saturday... trying to get more ideas for what he needs. Does he needs sheets? If yes, what size? Should I try and ship his stuff right away, or will he really need anything before Phase I is over?  He is telling us that he can have his car around the first week of May (after Phase I)... what has been your experience??

My son started A school the first week in January.   He'd come home for Christmas and found out he could drive his car back and park it on base, he just wouldn't be able to drive it till he'd phased up.  If your son has a way to get his car to Charleston, he can have it there before he's officially allowed to drive it.
