Hi all! My DH is in boot camp now, graduates 2/11/11. He will be an SECF, my understanding is that he will find out if he gets ET, FT, or STS during BESS. I'm trying to get a better picture of what the rest of his schooling will look like.

On the sheet they gave us with his rate description at MEPS, it said basic sub school was 4 weeks long...but here I see that it's 8 weeks?

What all is involved in BESS, what are the rules he has to follow? Can our son and I live with him at all during that time? When will we know if the Navy will pay for us to move?

Do we have the option to live on base or do we have to get a place off base?

I'm sure I'll have PLENTY more questions but that's all I can remember at the moment. :) Thanks!!

Hey Mamamiri my husband is in bootcamp too and is graduating a week after yours is and is in the same program. I have the same exact questions that you have too....I hope someone can help us with this. We have a 3month old girl, and we want to be with him too. I hope we can be united with our man soon
Thanks Cheri! You too! Are you going to be at Meet and Greet Thursday evening?
oh ok, oh ya, we'll see each other at PIR. you cant miss me, ill be the one holding a baby and have a US amy soldier with me :)
Yes, he will put his choices down, and be assigned his rate during BESS, which is 8 weeks, but may be more if they have a hold before they class up.Priority for choices goes to those with best scores.  I do not know the info. about moving there, as I am a mom, not a wife. I do know they will have to be stationed there for a certain amount of time for you to move there. When he gets to Groton they have some access to computers at NEX & Liberty Center, and he can call. As soon as he gets an address (it's faster if they pay for a PO box at Nex), they he can have his cell phone & computer sent to him and call you when he is not on duty or in class. He will have to earn his cards to have off base time, and civilian clothing. They start on white card, and do qualifications that they get signed off on to earn higher cards. I just attended my son's BESS this weekend and it was fabulous!

Heather...my son is currently in Groton (BESS) I am going to CT next month for graduation can you give me any information as to how all of that works, will my son have to give my name at the guard gate or send me a special pass?  Also my younger son (he's 13) will be going with me, I assume he needs a state ID card to get on base?  What time does the graduation start?  How long does it last?  After BESS graduation I know they go to ATT and TECHNO, how long are those schools/classes, because that is not considered A School if I'm thinking correctly.  I'm sorry I feel like I have a billion questions my son hasn't given me much information about graduation, I think he is more just looking forward to us coming to see him.

Thank you for any information you can give me.

If I can answer I will be more than glad to, our sons do not get much info. BESS Graduation is usually Fri. @ 8:00am every other week, however they moved ours to 9:00 am. Lasts 1-1&1/2 hours then they were free until Monday am. Getting in and out of the gate totally depends on who is on duty. The main gate is currently closed, so we had to use the commercial gate, either your son will have a pass waiting at pass office next to main gate, or like I did you call him & he will meet you to go to pass office.Everyone was VERY helpful & kind so don't hesitate to ask questions... I rented a car, so you need either rental papers or registration, insurance card & license. Then you get a pass for the day to get in. The next day all we needed was our driver's license, rental papers & son with us to show his ID. As long as your son is with you you can go ,most places on base, NEX, Galley and drive around for a tour. As far as your younger son I think either an ID card or birth certificate will work. They only checked driver's ID and Military person's ID with us, but just in case at least have his birth certificate. Graduation is small & so much more personal, they will even pause for you to take pictures. I thought it was well worth the effort to be there, even flying from GA. My son brought some friends along for dinner, movies and mall so we even "adopted" a few sailors for the weekend. You can go in the barracks, they sign you in & wait downstairs while they change. It was neat to get an inside view of their lives now. A bit like college & a big fraternity hee hee. ATT is actually done sort of self study, but there is generally 2-4 week hold before they start, so my son is on hold. Then you are right techno, not sure how long, then A school. My son is communications or radio so A school is fairly long.He however has a great attitude, and even replies, hey at least I'm getting paid to ... shovel snow, move furniture, have watch, clean, so all in all he is very happy in CT. They are all looking forward to really "working" but they are learning a lot & enjoy most of their training. I suggest you go to the Nautilus & museum, we enjoyed it & it is free. Sorry, I'm so long winded, but I knew basically nothing & had to figure it out as I went. Enjoy your time, our kids are very different now & settled into their new lives. If you need any more info. just ask.
HeatherMc....thanks for sharing the information.  God first we are going next month to visit him.  We are planning to go to BESS but when I ask my son he didn't know too much about it.  This is very helpful.

they gave my husband a paper that said 4 weeks also - but he has a different rate - and his was definitely 8..

they said most of the handouts they have are WAY outdated.
