If your Sailor is a Saturday Departure, GO WITH THEM TO THE AIRPORT, if at all possible. We were able to see him interact with his new Shipmates and hear more stories about his Boot Camp experience. My husband did not go, but me and his Fiancée did. I wouldn’t trade this time with him for the world. He had to be there at 0100 hours, we got there about an hour later, they were still dividing up into departure groups so we had plenty of time before we all had to go through security which opens at 0500, the security was no problem either, they let us though with a GATE PASS. This was at Midway. Once our Sailor was handed his boarding pass, we just handed the Ticketing people our ID’s (must be a driver’s license or STATE ID card). The reason I mention this is because we had “military ID’s” and they didn’t want us using these. I also was able to get photos of the people that he hung out with during Boot Camp. This is a MUST. Please do this if you can even if you get little or NO sleep. His Fiancée and I only got 3 HOURS sleep, but we did this, and it was worth every moment.

Our SR is going to Goose Creek for Nuke school.  His Nuke recruiter told him that he would either leave Sat/Sun/or Monday.....How can we find out when & how long he will be in Great Lakes awaiting departure for Goose Creek????  Is that something our SR will tell us in his letters?  We have yet to receive one yet, but I believe he will be able to write us this Sunday acording to his form letter.

Much thanks

Your SR will let you know the details. RTC's Public Affairs Office cannot give out information about a specific SR.

I knew before my son left that he would be attending ATT at Great Lakes. Hopefully, someone whose SR/SA is a Nuke will respond.

My son is Nuke graduating on 4/22.  He leaves SAT at 0300.  He provided this information in his 2 letter to me.

Hope this helps.

He might have to be at the airport at 0300 AM make sure with him, I don't think there are many flight flying out at that time of the morning esp. out of Midway, security didn't even open up there until 0500.  My son's flight left out at 1145, but there were some that left as early as 0700, and a few at 0915

my husband is going there for the same thing and im hoping we will get to spend all sat with him but i havent heard anything yet either

Thanks TxLadyJane,

Your post was very helpful!! Hopefully soon I'll find out when my bf will be leaving for A School. Nevertheless, I'm glad that the two of you got the chance to spend time with your SR before he left.

You are very welcome, and it will mean a lot to your new Sailor if you are able to spend time with them at the airport.
We did the same thing with our son last week at O'Hare. He had to be there at 6:30am but his flight didn't leave for Pensacola until 5:30pm. We got there at 7, got a gate pass (make sure you have id), and were able to spend the day with him. It was wonderful to see how many people would stop to tell these kids "thanks for serving."
I'm so glad we had the opportunity to spend that time with him.
Where do you get a gate pass?
At the ticket gate. Your Sailor will have to get that for you. You (everyone wanting a gate pass) will each need your id. Enjoy your weekend!!!
What if a child is going to need a gate pass, age 11? There is not an ID for her.
