Arriving at Boot Camp 3/17/11

Hello everyone! My Nephew just arrived last night, and I wanted to see if there were any other M4M's with the same arrival date. I went through this whole boot camp thing recently. My son was in boot camp from December 14th, 2010 to February 18, 2011. It is now turn for my Nephew to succeed in the beginning of what will be an unforgettable, ever learning and experiencing journey! I wish all of your loved one's great success!

Hi Dee!

My son also arrived in Chicago on 3/17/11. He called when his plane landed to let me know that he had arrived safely, but I haven't heard anything from him since then. I am anxiously awaiting "The Box" and a letter. Have you heard any news from your nephew?

Hi Virginia,

Nothing more than he had arrived and was safe. The waiting is torturous, I know! But, i do believe we should hear something by the 2 week time line. However, that may not be until week three (of them being gone) because the first week is "P" days (processing days).  That sounds confusing. Sorry.  See below... there's amazing info there!

This is a fantastic power point presentation made by Craig, a N4M member. He was in the Navy himself and has a son in the Navy. You'll see maps, photos - a great overview of the beginning processing days.

Next Steps:

1. Next check messages left on your personal page - from above menubar, click MY PAGE, scroll down - see the links to bootcamp groups - join those. You'll find that JessicaB has posted a welcoming message for you with links to the Bootcamp and Depper groups. Join the one appropriate. If you have an address (either from your recruit or the recruiter), start writing (plain regular letter size envelopes - the two addresses may be different - don't panic - it'll get there - use the one your recruit gives you as soon as you get it). Remember to check you status box (upper right) for messages on your Inbox, friend requests, etc.  Here is the link to Bootcamp moms group.

2. Barracks are named after ships. For example Ship 12 is USS Triton which may house more than one division. The real USS Triton has been decommissioned.
3. When you get the letter with the PIR date, join the group for that - click here to see list of PIR groups.

   You'll get a letter with the PASSWORD to print the parking pass.  KEEP THIS LETTER.  If you are using Internet Explorer (doesn't work), download Mozilla Firefox (free - will work) and use it to print your parking pass for PIR. 4. Next join this group to prepare for PIR. Read through the many topics. Your questions should be answered (such as hotels to stay, how many guests, parking, what to wear, etc.)

5. If you know where your sailor is going for A school or his rating, check for groups listed by Job Rating. If you know what ship he is going to, check for groups listed by name of his ship (the active ships out on the Fleet not the bootcamp barracks named after ships). 1. Want to learn how to use NAVY FOR MOM site? Go to FORUM, HOW TO DO STUFF ON N4M category, look at the many discussion of changing your password, username, downloading a photo, making your profile private, etc. 
2. If you are getting too many email notifications, just click "STOP FOLLOWING" located just underneath the input comment box.
3. Be sure to click on the MY PAGE tab on the menubar. This takes you to your personal page. Here you'll find a summary of activities including comments left on your page. On your personal page, you'll find a list of discussions created or participated in and blogs that you have created.
4. Look at your status box on the upper right - with INBOX, ALERTS, FRIENDS, SETTINGS. Just underneath that will be a line with invitations from others to attend events or join another group.
5. If you have joined a bunch of groups, you can always go right to them by click GROUPS tab, then "MY GROUPS" in small print on the left - same thing with Discussions and Blogs. 
6. With any group, there are discussions added by members. The list displayed may not be the entire list (group admins can set the number to display). Be sure to click "View All" under the Discussions (on the right just under the displayed list of discussions).

Since you have been thorugh this before, can you please kinda keep an eye on the newbies coming in?  Please review the information I posted with the last comment. We welcome feedback since everything is fresh in your mind. What some of us are trying to do is get basic  information out quickly to new members on how to connect and use this site. Hopefully this will eliminate the need to answer the same questions repeatedly. Thank you.

My son also arrived on March 17th with the very scripted call coming in at 2;25am on the 18th that he just got there.  Have you received a form letter with your nephew's address  yet.  All I got was the box so far.  Anxiously awaiting to begin mailing letters.

Hi...My son left San Diego on the 16th.  He is Ship 07 Div 169.  Hard to get used to him being gone and unreachable!!   Very nervous about planning trip for graduation!

My husband left from San Diego on 3/16 as well. He's Ship 12 Div 168. Can't wait for graduation! Our son will be so happy to see him.

Our son is 3. It was hard but I'm glad that my son is being good while his dad is gone. Maybe your son flew out with my husband? I know that there was 3 other people flying out with him and 2 were girls so who knows. How are you adjusting?
