Hey guys! My sailor and I are planning to get married within the next year and I will be moving to Norfolk to be with him. We have discussed moving on base and I was curious to see what it was like. What are some pros and cons and what are the advantages/disadvantages of living on base vs off base? Thanks so much!

I think the biggest thing is money .. if you live in base housing you do not get BAH. for example we live OFF base, we get $1390 for BAH our rent is $600 ish after gas , electric it adds up to $700. With the remainder of the money we pay, phone bills, cable, car insurance, and gas. Therefore his paycheck goes straight to the things we need.

Navymomx3--I'm so sorry to hear about that! I can't imagine what yall went through...that is my worst fear. I hear Norfolk has some bad areas. Right now, I'm leaning towards the on base housing just because I'm afraid something like that will happen and he won't be home all the time due to duty.

My husband is stationed at Norfolk but we live off base in Virginia Beach.  I agree with what you've heard--there are a lot of places in Norfolk that I wouldn't want to live.  The biggest thing to look at when you're making your decision is BAH vs the ACTUAL cost of living.  We came here straight from OCS so we didn't have the normal time to get on housing lists etc so we had to find housing off base.  At least in the VBeach area, our BAH only covers our rent.  Of course, things may be cheaper in Norfolk and if you're just getting married you wouldn't need 3 bedrooms like we did.  We definitely pay a lot more for the safety of our neighborhood, the size of our townhouse and the better school district.
DreaB--Thanks for your reply. If we decide to live off base, it will definitely be in the city of Norfolk because he doesn't want to deal with the tunnel traffic and such when he goes into work. Does anybody know of any "good" areas in Norfolk? Also, what is the average amount in rent in that area?

One thing about living too close to base is the noise.  I think near Oceana would be horrible, since there always seems to be a jet when I go shopping around there.

I live in base housing at Naval Station Norfolk, there are occasional jets, helicopters, mostly prop planes and the noise isn't too great.  If you're going to go off-base, pay attention to the highway exits.
