I love the historical area of Portsmouth known as Olde Towne, along the Elizabeth River directly across from Norfolk's Waterside. Drive there from Norfolk (264W through the tunnel, then first right on Effingham, right on High St); or more fun, park at MacArthur Mall or nearby and take the $1.50 ferry from Waterside across, which is a great thing in itself, as you get great views and the ferry is charming. You disembark at High Street in Olde Towne; High Street is lined with great shops and galleries (Courthouse Galleries has free programs the first Sunday of the month), and the Tidewater Community College art school gallery is also very good and free. http://www.visitportsva.com/galleries.html You can walk & explore the lovely streets (some cobblestone) filled with beautiful historic Victorian homes to the north of High Street. Also, you can walk from the ferry along the Riverwalk north to the Tidewater Yacht Marina. Walk down the center dock to The Deck, with casual bar, deck, dining and great views. Lots of good restaurants along High St too or take a lunch along.
Where to stay: Marriott's Renaissance Hotel is right on the Riverwalk - http://www.marriott.com/hotels/hotel-deals/orfpt-renaissance-portsm... - check their link "Deals at this hotel."
Bed and Breakfasts include the Patriot Inn - http://www.bbonline.com/va/patriot/

We just got back from Family Cruise day with our son at Norfolk. Had a great visit. We stayed at the Navy Lodge, right down the road from the Base. ItT was very nice, clean, updated and had a light breakfast that helped get the morning going. Our room had kitchen-ette, I'm not sure if all the rooms do? Nice to have if you are there for an extended stay.
Sounds good! Navy Lodge 800 NAVY INN (800-628-9466) https://www.navy-lodge.com (be sure to read reservation policy and FAQs)
The Norfolk downtown waterfront features an area called Waterside Marketplace, which has restaurants (Outback, Joe's Crab Shack, & Hooters), shops, and a marina. Next to Waterside is Nauticus http://www.nauticus.org (an "interactive science and technology center that explores the naval, economic, and nautical power of the sea" and where you can go aboard the Battleship Wisconsin. http://www.watersidemarketplace.com
I found a good "get out of the house" spot at Chrysler Museum of Art.

Parking is free, general admission is free. I was able to hit the free bus and hit an outlying exhibit in the form of a historic house.
Gas anyone ever stayed in a condo in the sandbridge area?
We went to the Nauticus last Feb. when we where visiting and it was alot of fun.  It will take you most of the day.  So it is a great thing to do if you are waiting for your sailor to get off from work.
When visiting our sailor we found a GREAT seafood restaurant in Virginia Beach - 'Hot Tuna' - Looks very unassuming
on the outside (its in a what looks like a strip mall), but the dress is casual, lots of people of all ages, a little crowded,
but excellent food . . . .
Thanks, we may try it when we go.

Here's the link to the Norfolk MWR site:  Naval Station Norfolk MWR

"Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) covers a wide scope of worldwide operations that provide sailors and their families with the finest facilities, programs and activities to meet their recreational and social needs. MWR provides Single Sailor programs, fitness facilities, tickets and travel and motion pictures ashore. Furthermore, their programs encourage positive individual values, aid in recruitment and retention, and provide for the physical, cultural and social needs of a mobile Navy."

Among the links for boating, bowling, etc, I found information about cottages for rent! The Cottages at Dam Neck, Virginia Beach VA

Also Williamsburg:  Cabins at Chatham Annex Williamsburg

Along these lines, here is the Navy MWR list of camping, cabins & RV parks for the USA, alphabetical by state, with Italy and Japan too; scroll down to Virginia (seven locations).  http://www.mwr.navy.mil/mwrprgms/cabin.htm

Places we ate at on our last visit to Norfolk, all very good.
