 :). Hello

My son is graduating from BESS on May 20. I want to go and see it but I've kind of lost the trail when it comes to good information about travel and visiting. My son seems to have no information or any idea of what I'm supposed to do to get in to see him and I don't even know the name of the airport I'm supposed to fly into.

I was also wondering if when I fly in I'll need to rent a car or if it's reasonable to cab/public transport around there.

Places to go out, out to dinner ?

I was going to get two hotel rooms, one for him and one for me so he could sleep and shower by himself for once in a blue moon but I don't know, and he doesn't seem to know, if that's possible.

Anybody have any idea how to go about seeing your child graduate from BESS? All answers appreciated. Thanks!

My son is graduating BESS on 6/10, have not even thought about how we will get on base, guess I better ask.  When my son flew to Groton from Great Lakes they flew him into Providence, RI which is approx. an hour drive from Groton.  But there is also Hartford, CT airport which is about the same travel time.  I have been watching airplane tickets for both airports and it is cheaper for me to fly into Providence, RI from Houston.  My son said that we can stay at the Navy Lodge which is located on the base, and he would find out the process of reserving the room.  Sorry that is all I can help you with.

I have not purchased my ticket yet, we will only be traveling one way home...we are driving his car up to him.
We will be flying out of providence on a Tuesday....alot cheaper than a Sunday and we fly continental or united into IAH

I think Providence, RI airport (T.F. Greene Airport) makes the most sense. Boston is really far and traffic is a mess up there. Providence is a little less than an hour away and an easy drive. I think there's a smaller one even closer but I'm not sure how flying in there would work. When I came for a visit and flew in, I rented a car and that worked out just fine, since I needed it the whole weekend. I can't tell you about cabs since I didn't use them, but I don't see much infrastructure for public transport around here, honestly.

Hotels: He can stay in a hotel overnight as long as he is on Blue Card (i.e. not in trouble) which he should be by the time he gets to BESS. You can get a room at a place in town or the Navy Lodge (which is not on base and I'm pretty sure you don't have to have a military ID for reservations), or your son can make reservations for you at the Navy Gateway Inn. The Gateway, though, from what I hear tends to fill up so reservations should be made well in advance.

Places to eat...of course there are your regular chain stores, I am still getting an idea of what local type places are around. We have eaten at the Groton Townhouse Restaurant a couple of times and the food is very good!

Things to do... There is the Nautilus and Submarine Force Museum which is actually quite cool. And we really enjoyed the Mystic Aquarium. There are a lot of things in Mystic...I would do a google search and it should bring up a bunch. Maybe others will chime in with a few other things. I've only been here a couple of weeks and we've been BUSY so really haven't done much yet.

P.S. He will need to accompany you for you to get on base, as far as I know. I am not sure if there are special arrangements for family for BESS graduation. I have my own military dependent ID so it was not something I even had to look at.

:). Hey -- I just wanted to thank you all for responding and to update this thread -- I'm flying from Chicago to Providence and then taking a train down to Mystic, staying in a hotel there and renting a car in Mystic to drive the 12 minutes to the sub base. From what they told me, there is also a regional Amtrak train that goes up somewhere near the base.

Graduation is at nine but they say to be there at seven for who knows what reason. But that means I'll be flying, bunking down ad waking up to catch a cab to the base and then getting my rental car when I get back. Thats what I call a big weekend :)

HELP, I hope I have found the correct page, I am really new to this.  My son is in Groton Ct for Sub School.  He will be a culinary specialist on the Montpelier ( Mighty Monty).  His graduation is coming up on 7/1/11, and I would like to attend since I missed his graduation from Ft. Lee in February.  We will be driving out (long drive from Illinois) so we should have options on where to stay.  However I have NO information on this and don't have a clue where to find any.  Can anyone help or offer assistance?

HI -- there really is no information similar to what we got at RTC graduation. There are a couple of reasonable hotels in Groton, and there's the Navy lodge. I looked on Expedia and finally booked in Mystic because I figured the Navy hotels might be a little crowded. My son is staying overnight with me there -- he had to get a permission chit for being gone overnight. He told me they muster at 6:45 in the morning and then go down to the gate to collect family, if any, and escort us to the BESS building. We're not allowed in the barracks but I think we're allowed at NEX and the BESS building. I don't know if your car is allowed on base.

That's all I got. Sorry there's not more. My son basically had nothing for me until today, two days before graduation, and all I know is that he's coming to escort me to see him graduate.

Thank You for responding.  I am still searching.  :)  Enjoy graduation
