HOUSING HELP

Hi my husband is in bootcamp right now and will be doing his A school in Great Lakes. we've been told different things regarding housing and moving his dependents up with him while he attends school. His recruiters told us that he should be able to file for housing during boot camp , though I spoke to him today and he said that he would only be able to look into it once he starts his A school. I am so confused and stressed. We have two kids and I have limited time where we are at, and we were under the impression that the Navy would move us no problem and getting us settled should be smooth right after his PIR graduation. Any help on this would be great. Is there a checklist of what we need to do? What if A school is 19weeks there all together, does that mean they won't move us?

Hi aaronslady,

What your husband told you is correct. He can't apply for "Live Ashore." until after boot camp. That is when he will have his permanent orders. (ie- his orders for (A)school) Right now your hubby has orders for boot camp only, not for (A)school. He needs his orders for (A)school in order to Apply for "Live Ashore." He will get his orders the last week of boot camp.

If your husband is going to be an ET or FC then school at Great Lakes is 8 to 9 months in addition to several months of time being on hold. So your hubby will be there for a year at least.

As soon as your husband graduates he needs to apply for "Live Ashore" right away. The sooner he gets all the required paper work done the better. Of course he will have to keep tabs on the process. I heard the process takes anytime from 2 weeks to 2 months.

If the school isn't long enough the USN won't pay to move you from where you are to his "A" School. Also the command doesn't have to allow him to live ashore if his school isn't long enough. The lenght depends on the days the school is not the days he is on hold.

As far as moving right after PIR, that isn't how it happens.

If his school is long enough for him to live ashore and for the USN to move you, it still takes time for the live ashore package to be approved (once he gets to "A" school) than it takes time for the paper work to get set up for the move (if you are having the USN move you). You need a POA from him so that you can sign for the pick up while you are at home for the move (the odds of him being able to come home to help you with everything is slim to none, school comes first).

NOTHING in the USN is quick as Sandy said, it can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months or even longer for everything. Than something to think about is there is normally a wait list to get into base housing. Unless you want to move out in town and he will need to look for an apt on his off time from school, and duty.

Angie what is a POA and when can he send me that?

Also before he fills out the packet, will they let him know that there is a wait list? I heard that it is a different packet for off base housing.

POA stands for: Power Of Attorney.

We had to do this before my my son left for the Navy so that we could deal with his car insurance, bank account, car loan exetra while he is away.

Most banks have Notary Publics. Some banks offer notarizing free of charge if you have an account with them. The average cost is $25 dollars. Your Sailor can fax you the paperwork to have it notarised.

Keep in mind aaronslady that off base housing is expensive. Please have a place to live before you move.

As Chief Angie will tell you. There have been many families who just move out to Great Lakes with out having a place to live first, expecting the Navy to handle everything. It does not work out for them. What ever you do, please don't go that route.

It is not easy but I am sure everything will work out. Let me know

and no I would never move out with our children without having a place to live first, that's why
I'm trying to get all of the info I can so we can do this accurately and avoid delay if possible. I've 'heard that some families have gotten one word answers for things and ended up having to go through all other sets of papework which caused a longer delay in being reunited. Such as if they would have told them in advance of a "dummy lease" and etc. I'm very new at this so any information is helpful.

Oh and we would much rather get a place on base if we can...

I think many choose off base housing because they can keep the extra BAH that they do not use. When you live on base it just takes all the BAH. Some of the early posts in the wives section I think have a lot of info about housing.

I'll look for the posts Karla...but doesnt everyone get the same BAH depending on your rank? Or is it dependants? As far as having extra, I think thatonly happens when the cost of livingin an area isn't that high. am I right?

Well you get more BAH depending on the cost of living. My son is in SD and even with the high cost of apts still ends up with extra money every month including utilities. If you are in on base housing I think it includes all utilities (not positive about this) but you just live there for the full amt of your BAH. So it just depends on what you want. It seems like more couples have chosen off base housing since this group got started than on base because of keeping the extra pay. But if you need a house that might make a huge difference in what you can find reasonable to rent off base. My son is having his second child and needs more room so he is considering base housing now.

I think if we would probably end up paying a lot out of pocket if we were to live off base with a family of 4 in Great Lakes so base housing would be more ideal for us, and yes I think all the utilities are included. Ijust think it takes longer to get on base than off base...but who knows?!!

BAH is based on the area you live (or are stationed), dependents or none, and the paygrade.

There is no difference between having just a spouse or having a spouse and 10 kids, you get the same amount of money.
