June BC Calendar

[MidwestMom]

Here is a calendar to keep track of when our loved ones leave for BC June 2011.  Stole the idea from the Leaving in March group!  I tried to go back through the site to get dates from those posted.  Help me keep it updated!  :)

Funny!  Your fiance is lucky.  My son's last days home included cutting mulberry trees out of our evergreens and trimming goat hooves.  We wanted to make sure he didn't miss us too much while he was at BC!  :)

Hello Ya'll!  That is funny about the goat hooves! Maybe I need to find my son something to remember me by.  He told his fiance, whom we picked up last night, that we are killing him on vacation.  We are like come on lets go walk then lets go to the beach then lets go to Savannah and walk some more. He said Boot Camp has nothing on us! ;.)

Oh boy, I got a call from my daughter this morning. She said that her recruiter called her today and asked if she would like to ship out in one week. Ack!!! Needless to say she called me, she told me she is not ready. That her June 27 date was earlier than she expected and she doesn't want to go next week. Are there any repercussions to her calling her recruiter back and saying no? It is what she wants to do, I made sure of that (I know it is not what I want her to do either, but that is for selfish reasons).

She has a nearly full-time job that she has given notice to, but that was only several days ago that she gave them her two weeks. We also have a vacation planned and paid for in early June (her original ship date worked out perfect for her to spend vacation with us, then have a week to finalize everything). She is freaking out because she doesn't want to go yet but is worried that telling her recruiter no isn't a good idea.

I don't think it's a problem at all if she sticks with her original ship date.  As you said, she has work commitments and the paid vacation to consider. It's just that some recruits would prefer to go earlier...  if given the opportunity of shipping out in 2 weeks rather than waiting til the end of June, I'd jump at the chance -- but then again I don't

 

Her enlistment contract specifies her ship date and that can't be changed unless both she and the Navy agree to change it.

Oops!  Just realized I must have deleted a line by accident when saving my response above...

It should have read something like this :  "I'd jump at the chance -- but then again I don't have commitments that would keep me from doing so."

 

...and I agree with MidwestMom's reply down below...   if your daughter does want an earlier ship date, she can call to let the recruiter know she's willing as long as she is given sufficient notice to take care of her personal affairs.

 

Whichever way she decides, I wish her the best!

Yes I don't think so either. My son had the opportunity to leave last November but was given on a few days notice so he turned it down.

Thanks Alex. She is excited to go. I know she would probably give up the vacation. I think her main issue is that she is currently out of state (well out of my state). She enlisted in Ohio because she is currently living with my mother and we live in Illinois (another story altogether). I know that she wants to get back here to say her goodbyes to her good friends and would probably even give that up. I have the feeling that if he said two weeks, he might have gotten a favorable reply. We have a lot to take care of to get her set to go (POAs, dealing with her car, and some other stuff) and one week wasn't going to cut it when you have to work across three states to get it done and she didn't want to leave her job on bad terms (even though she will never ever go back there and will probably never need the referral).

I know she is ready to get on with this and I know she is a little scared too. I told her to do what she thought was best for her and her alone and let her recruiter (and me) know.

As Alex already said, in order for her to take a new date, she'd have to sign a new contract.  My son did this last month, but his new contract came with a 4 week ship date (from the date of the new contract), not a 1 week ship date.  Not only that, but he had to sign the contract THAT DAY in order to get the earlier date!  If she decides that is too early, she could always tell her recruiter that she'd be willing to go early, but needs more than a week's notice in order to take care of her personal business.  That seems like a very reasonable response.  Good luck!

Earlier in the year my son was offered the rate he really wanted but only if he left in less than a week.  He thought about it but decided not to take it because of obligations he had.  It was his decision but I was not ready for such a fast change of plans.  June 8th is soon enough for me. The recruiter was fine with it.  Said he was just looking out for my son and trying to find hiim the rate he wanted.
