Talking about the backpack and what they can take - does anyone know if there is a size limit to the laptop they can have.  We are buying one this weekend for our son's going away so he can have it all programmed the way he wants it when he gets to A School.  I love mine but I think it may be a little large, 17", to lug around in the Navy.  I do want him to have the best but I'm not sure what to do.  I can't ask my son since I know he will only say he doesn't want us to spend that much money on him, but I am anyway.

I already told mine I was going to get him one for A school since he only has a desk top. I thought about just getting him a 13' netbook.  He doesn't need to game anyway. :.)
I'm thinking of going with that size also.  My only concern is that it won't have everything he needs.  He is a communications/tv/production major and wants to keep up with it online while in the Navy.
You could always ask a computer geek like at Best Buy or one of his friends who is probably just as savy but I understand that perfectly.
For portability -- I'd go with the 16" as well for them.  I have a 17", but that's because my hubby and I need the LARGE print, lol!  I'll bet you could trip out a 16" and spend more than enough money.  Unfortunately, technology changes so quickly that we can't afford to keep up with the newest version! :)

We've been Mac users for so long I'm not sure he even knows how to use Windows anymore but I'm not spending that much $ on a laptop for him. What's most important to me is that his laptop has a built-in camera so we can Skype, I will NEED to see his face for my own sanity.

I'm thinking 15'' sounds good.

Yes it will have a webcam, he's going to get sick of seeing me.

my son said his recruiter told him he can have any size laptop mine has a 17` one bought 2 yrs ago his cell phone and some civilian clothes....i do know the backpack has to be all black.....
Okay what has happened to everyone? Is everybody freaking out like me? We had my son's Anchors Aweigh party yesterday. The weather was beautiful which I am so thankful for that! We had several days of bad weather leading up to it. Anyway, the younger group all played volleybal and soccer while the older of us(me) stayed under the shade! I think he had a great time. We made a collage of pictures the night before and put on a poster board. Then used the idea of paper for notes to him for me to send and email address for those who wanted his address once he got to boot camp. We had several hotdogs leftover though so I guess we wil be eating them into Memorial day. :.) I gave him the Sailors Bible at the party too. Can anyone think of anything else we need to get or be doing? I got a prepaid card. Getting the POA next week... one week to go. Thank you for all your support over these last weeks. Your comments have helped me a great deal.

Did he already open his Navy Federal acct?

No he hasn't. He thought he could just do it when he got there. I've been trying to tell him that may be so but I need to be on it in order to pay bills etc.

He absolutely can and most do but my son is 17 and although he has a job and his own money, really isn't familiar with online banking. I wanted to set up a joint account to help monitor things for him and that's easier to do when we're together as far as signatures and stuff. One less thing to worry about for him.
