Just changed our hotel reservation from the Ramada to Residence Inn - Waukegan.  Kept seeing bad reviews on the Ramada - hope I won't be disappointed with the switch.  I think the extra money was worth it for the Residence - free "light dinner" on Thursday and a suite over a room with 2 beds.

See you all Thursday, May 12th at the Meet and Greet!

You should not be disappointed! Have fun!
Has anyone tried the Candlewood Suites in Waukegan. Supposed to be a little over 3 miles from the base.? I just booked the weekend for our SR's PIR on June 3.

We stayed at the Ramada Inn and they gave us the PIR discount. The rooms were clean, the beds were the best I've ever had in a hotel. Their amenities aren't exactly as they publicize them as. They had 2 machines in the "workout room". Their gift shop is itty bitty and shares the same space as the workout room.

I was VERY displeased that they only offer a 7am shuttle to the graduation. We found it was easier to drive and we got there substantially earlier and got FAR better seats than those who showed up so late.  The free breakfast was started an hour earlier than normal, which was perfect. I think the only thing I truly didn't like was the time the first shuttle was leaving. I felt bad for those who chose to take it, when the other hotels were leaving a half hour earlier or more.

The Ramada staff worked hard to provide us with a nice Meet and Greet and helped me organize the amt coming with ease. They had name tags ready for us, and that was awesome!

I would suggest staying there but plan to drive to PIR. The shuttle just isn't worth the time.

Is the Ramada close to the Walmart?   Is parking easier driving than shuttle?    karchuleta@centurytel.net   Kathy

My son graduated on 5-26-11.  We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express and it was very nice and they offered a discount for the graduation.  It's about 4 miles from the base so it didn't take long at all.  They also offer a free breakfast.

Home Away From Home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2009

I have stayed at MANY top of the line Hotels in my life but there is none that compare to this one. The customer service, from the front desk to the Manager, was impecable. Every employee there treated you like they were hosting their own families. The rooms were spacious, emaculate and comfortable. The business center was awesome and the restaurant/bar was a soothing place to begin and end your day. There are lots of restaurants, shopping malls, things to do around this location and is probably the best place to stay for those attending any events at the Great Lakes Naval Base. I most certainly will go back if my travels take me in that direction!

“THE PLACE to stay for Navy Graduations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2011

Just got back from two days at this place and it was awesome. The staff is excellent, the hotel rooms are super, the beds are to die for -- I almost didn't want to come back and sleep in mine. Hotel was quiet with a great area inside to take pics and talk with our navy bootcamp graduate.
Hope it is this great..I was going to stay in Waukegan but found this one and booked it instead.  Will be staying there this upcoming weekend, Aug 12th PIR...will keep everyone updated.  The website looked wonderful and I booked nonrefundable on hotels.com for $70 per night.  The last Hilton Garden Inn I stayed at was extremely nice.
For convenience, price & amenities, we were completely pleased with Navy Lodge.  It's on Meridian, right off Buckley (where you enter the RTC gate).  It is $65 a night, and the location is out of traffic, not even 5 minutes from PIR, and they are most accomodating.  You get a take-out breakfast every morning.  You do not have to be a military dependent, as long as you know your SR's Ship & Div #'s.  If you want to attend meet & greet, you are close to the Ramada.  Plus, they give you a map of the base, directions to shopping malls, and names & addresses of eateries.
This thread is super informative and helpful and I thank you for it. I've made reservations at the Navy Lodge for now but might even switch to the Residence Inn since I'm a member of Marriot Club and will accumulate points at the same time as enjoying a good stay and pretty good service. Will ponder it :)
We stayed at the Navy Lodge for PIR June 3rd and loved it. They have a great little Breakfast Bag to Go- so when you leave early for PIR, you don't miss breakfast! I figure we will be staying at a Navy Lodge wherever our Sailor is based. They also gave us a little card to use at the NEX convenient store before we able to go with our Sailor. Besides all of that, we felt such a part of the Navy, staying right there amidst the base housing.
So, I keep reading about the breakfast bag to go - can you tell me what was in it?  Thanks!
