My husband and I are currently in Kings Bay, GA. We've received orders to Norfolk, VA and I was hoping to get some advice on best places to live. I've found several different military housing, but I'm unsure of how safe the areas are. The last thing I want is to move into a "not so good area" and be alone while he's on deployments.

Thanks so much!

We're in the newer area by the town center. I like it, I'm happy, and it seems decent and safe. Granted I've only been here a week, but from what I've seen so far, I think we'll be happy. We just moved here from Jacksonville, and I think Hampton is the same as Jacksonville. There are some sketchy areas you want to stay away from, but the places that are nice are fine.
Yes, I love that area.  I would love to be able to live in the Chapman Apartments above the town center....they are just too expensive.
When checking out apartments when you call ask if they take section 8 housing those are usually the neighbor hoods you want to stay out of. there are a few bad areas every where most ppl will tell you the best places to be would either be chesapeake or virginia beach. My personal opinion we have friends all over the hampton roads area and they all like where they live but yes there are sketchy area's everywhere you go. just be careful when looking.

I would suggest looking at these three websites.. They've helped me out a TON.. It eliminates your worry for safety and gives you a good idea of where the best neighborhoods are.. We just bought a house in VA Beach that is literally 15 min from the base and it's in one the BEST neighborhoods.. you just gotta do some digging, girl!

hotpads.com (easy way to help you see where apartments and homes are located)

crimemapping.com (type in the address that you are interested in and it will show you all of the crime that has happened near the residence)

neighborhoodscout.com (gives you the best neighborhoods in terms of safety, schools, and value)

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR THE INPUT. Because we are only going to be there for two years we decided to get military housing in Virginia Beach. My brother in law and his wife lived there for 2 years and felt very safe and loved the area. I'm so excited. I'll be halfway closer to my family in Pennsylvania...and I LOVE Virginia Beach.

Thanks again, girls, for all the help! It was greatly appreciated!!! :)

Just got orders to norfolk, i dunno if this was addressed in this discussion but im wondering if anyone knows any places that except dogs over 50lbs im having a really hard time finding some (especially some that arent ridiculous with pet fees), and i cant give up my dog lol he's all i got when my husband leaves lol.
We just got orders to Norfolk too! We too have a 90lb baby! hhaha, I have a feeling we might have trouble finding a home, plus we need at least 3 bedrooms. because of kids. Let me know if you find anything!!

@triciab2010

We ended up going with Wadwarth Shores military housing in Virginia Beach. They have NO weight limit for pets. You can have up to two cats and dogs. My brother in law used to live there and the area was nice and felt safe so we're going with that. We move in 10 days! TIME FLIES!!!

I have 2 pups that are both 50 pounds and we ended up going with Lincoln Military Housing. That way you don't have to pay security deposits and we have a fenced in backyard. What kind of dog do you have because there's a few they don't allow. There's also a bit of a wait depending on your rank so you may want to get an application in just in case you don't find anything else.
@ nicolet182

Thanks :) We decided a while back to go with Wadswarth Shores in Virginia Beach.

@kac46047

Wadswarth Shores in Virginia Beach has no weight limit!! My pups gonna be a good 70-80 lbs full grown!! So we had the same issue. Wadswarth Shores is very "pet welcoming"

is that military housing?? I was looking into off base housing but im considering more and more base housing just for the yards
